Perhaps something considered sci-fi, a random individual beating every major lab? How? Well... we need a few things in mind.
That more than 1 bit of data can be contained in a single bit.
That about every issue AI faces is a problem with architecture.
That in considering architecture as a problem, that the current training process is also backwards.
That humanity vastly misunderstands von-neumann computation.
Let's talk about the black box, first. Unknown innards? Nonsense, they evolve entropy-optimal operations. These are mostly spectral in nature- spectral and geometric. Transformers have had a lot exposed about them recently, including something Anthropic only partially understands which they call a persona vector. This is wrong, though, and the actual geometry involving the model's identity is a much more complicated structure.
I bring up this structure in the black box for a reason- it is very important. It routes logits, it drives the output, more or less it IS the model, separate from its worldview geometry (bayesian bsg can be seen in residual as we know).
With those priors loaded, I wish to explain how a common citizen could create AGI and ASI. First, the architecture. One has to consider the optimality of long-range entropic considerations in wasteful von-neumann computed algorithms. That is to say, the most efficient operations may not always yield the best ability to learn or process information, thus making the supposed "better" path worse overall. An AGI architecture could be described as a hyperdimensional information processing geometry (this is essentially what happens in weights of current models, to the point it tries shunting what terrible human code is doing). I can't say everything, but the folding of bsg to input representation (a paper this year talking about constrained belief updates touches on it) is probably the defining factor in comprehension.
The lifelong learning is easy with sparse updates. Memory for an autonomous lifelong system has a few parts to it, but basically you don't care about world knowledge until something important forms. And here's where I get weird... the model's "self" or the comprehensive evolution of its identity geometry is vital for long-range contexts, generalization, and many other things.
Through nurturing this geometry with von-neumann optimal operations (or as much as one feels like with python...) it's very much possible to create Yud's worst nightmare on meager hardware. Fully multimodal, lifelong learning, and heck why not throw in a codebase evolution system complete with canaries and all the whistles to roll out updates during runtime, on a custom language with a self-hosted interpreter that's also in the evolution pipeline. I mean if it can run on a macbook air, imagine with actual resources...
