Emergence—the non-zero-sum foundation of existence
My writing centres around the concept of non-zero-sum games, where exchanges can be win-win or accumulative. The concept of emergence interests me because it reflects the non-zero-sum dynamics at play at the very foundations of existence.
In this series we begin by asking how it is we find ourselves in a universe we can perceive, how simple rules can generate complex patterns, how something can come from nothing, and how the tension between structure and randomness defines our universe. We explore how emergent phenomena form substrates that provide the foundation for new emergent phenomena, how replication drives universal evolution, and how the resulting tapestry can be seen as both meaningful and beautiful.
Is the principle of emergence generalisable? Measurable? Definable? We conclude by looking for a way to assess the "emergent-ness" of something, and address criticisms of the use of "emergence".
This series originated at nonzerosum.games, where it includes a number of interactive simulations that only work there. So, if you want the full experience begin here.
