What if AGI isn’t some distant miracle, but a threshold — one we’re already approaching?

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is often framed in extremes: it’s either inevitable doom or an unreachable fantasy. But what if both views are missing something simpler — that AGI might emerge the same way life does, through a natural convergence of physical forces?

That thought pulled me into a deep question: what if life and intelligence aren’t separate phenomena, but two outcomes of the same underlying structure? That’s how I arrived at a framework I call EMIF: the convergence of Energy, Matter, Information, and Feedback.

When these four ingredients interact and reinforce one another in the right way, a system doesn’t just compute — it begins to persist, adapt, and evolve. In other words, it begins to behave like life. Or intelligence.

This isn’t a metaphor. It’s a testable way to think about AGI as a phase shift — not an engineering miracle, but a physical inevitability. I first introduced this idea in a deeper conceptual essay on EMIF here, which invites scientists to explore the underlying mathematical structure of the model. And theoretical physics might help us understand when that shift occurs — and more importantly, help us see it coming.

What EMIF Means

EMIF is short for Energy, Matter, Information, and Feedback. It’s a conceptual framework for thinking about the physical conditions under which life and intelligence arise.

Each of these components plays a role:

Energy (E): the fuel that drives transformation and change — like sunlight powering photosynthesis, or electricity running a neural network.
Matter (M): the substrate that stores structure and constraint — like carbon atoms forming proteins, or silicon forming logic gates.
Information (I): encoded knowledge and memory that guide behavior — like DNA storing genetic instructions, or data embeddings in a machine learning model.
Feedback (F): recursive loops that allow systems to adapt and self-modify — like a thermostat adjusting temperature, or a reinforcement learning agent updating its strategy

Life doesn’t emerge from any one of these in isolation. It emerges when they interact. And when that interaction becomes recursive enough — when feedback acts on feedback, information guides energy use, and structure supports memory — something new appears. A system begins to behave as if it knows how to persist.
