Join us for a group walk through the Baylands Nature Preserve in Palo Alto. At the beginning, we’ll decide if we want to walk the boardwalks (3ish miles, lots of birds) or to Byxbee Park (5ish miles, conceptual art sculptures).

Are you curious about meditation or jhana, and interested in discussing it from a science-based perspective?
Come join us for a conversation about this ancient practice, along with potential benefits and critiques. We will break into groups and work through a discussion guide. This can be used as a way to practice truth seeking.

Our December meetup will be dedicated to reflecting on the past 12 months. We’ll go through questions, then break into smaller groups for discussion.
This won’t be enough time for a complete annual review – its a starting point for more thorough assessment and intentional goal setting. Some helpful guides include this list of questions and the 8,760 Hours guide.
We’ll meet up at 5pm, and the structured discussion will start right at 6pm. As always, we will have casual discussion before the activity and afterwards. Snacks will be provided.

This month, we'll be testing out a new activity format called Deep Questions, followed by a brief presentation about a recent monthlong trip to the Philippines, and casual discussion beforehand and afterwards.
For Deep Questions, we will break into pairs and take turns answering an interesting, open-ended question. You and your partner spend about 6 minutes each listening to each other's answers. Afterwards, you pair up with someone new to answer a different question. Example questions can include:

Miami ACX is hosting our first Winter Secular Solstice in Sunrise, FL. The event will be similar to other secular solstices – except adapted to the spirit and community of South Florida. It will involve sharing food, storytelling, singing, bonfire and (optional) evening trek to the observatory +/- overnight camping.
All are welcome to participate, including friends & family. We have rented out a large, private campground for the event, with plenty of open space to stay overnight. While the evening portion is scheduled to run 4-9pm, it’s likely we will host daytime activities in a different area of Markham Park. We will email those details to all registrants as it gets closer.

What kind of events does your group usually run? What does it usually do?
We have monthly meetups that typically involve an activity related to applied rationality. Throughout the month there are social meetups happening from Miami up to Palm Beach.
Who would be a good fit for you group?
Anyone who is interested in LessWrong, ACX, or Effective Altruism will probably fit in. Everyone is welcome, even if you aren't familiar with these things.
Should they have any particular skills or have done some specific background reading?
No skills are required. Background reading might be suggested for a specific meetup but will usually not be required.
