I get a similar effect if sleep deprived long enough. A sense of operating on autopilot and doing things before thinking of them.
My guess is that air is too violent and diverse compared to something like ocean. A neutral buoyancy organism wouldn't calmly float, it would be buffeted around by wind and smashed against ground. And there's no "surface of the air" to anchor itself.
