I am a bit confused how you can coherently entangle spite as a commitment device vs spite as intrinsic rather than strategic. If Spite is being employed as a commitment device this necessarily seems to be evidence of using spite for instrumental ends - not as an end (i.e. terminal preference).

I would have loved to ask you - while you are in that state - what your view is on your own moral patienthood. Has it temporarily changed while you are in this state? Do you view your moral patienthood 100% tied your conscious self that is still "in here" so hurting the unconscious you is still morally bad, and whether the unconscious you does or doesn't see itself as having moral patienthood by itself without any attachment to your conscious self. E.g. "You're going to be in this state forever I'm afraid. Conscious you is gone. How does this change your view of your own moral patienthood?"
And then after you woke up I'd ask you similar questions to see how well the two yous match. And ohhh boy... it could be terrifying if I ask those really messed up thought experiments and find that your conscious and unconscious self have very different answers on how to act in particular situations.

Any LW/EA space I go to where you are brought up in passing there seems to be a model of the event constructed that a huge part (in fact, the majority) of the inappropriateness was because she was in the same building when you let her know you're just "going to the other room" etc etc.
On one level I hope I'm just in the minority and missed this for not following closely enough, but if not - I'm sorry - why the fuck was this not more clearly pointed out? It seems a huge difference to the story.

There's a temporal aspect here - spite might start as instrumental but become intrinsic through training dynamics.
