Inflation of grades blurs the distinction between good and outstanding. Without a separate level for excellence, the school simply ceases to notice it. In tenth grade, I sat next to a boy who knew all the formulas by heart but didn't understand where they came from. We both got straight As. The teacher didn't see the difference because the standard test only checked our ability to substitute numbers. This annoyed me the most in geometry.
