I wish I'd had this idea when my kids were young. I had a lot of trouble interesting them in money, as they rightly pointed out that they knew I would see to their needs. I think it would have helped them understand about the value of money as well as whatever else we were addressing. They would have been motivated by the opportunity to demonstrate that they were right. [In their mid-late 20's, they are both much smarter about money than I ever was or will be; not sure exactly how that happened].
This does remind me, though, of how useful data and actuarial principles can be for dealing with rationally inclined... (read more)
We will celebrate Petrov Day (one day early) with conversation and ideas for not ending the world. All are welcome, even if you've never read the blog but are just interested.
Feel free to bring food or drink or order something to eat or share during the event. Some cold drinks will be provided.
I failed to take into account that there is a UW football game. If you are driving and there's no street parking, pull into the driveway.
SSC readers, EAs, Rationalists or curious friends, join us for vegan soup and any other food and drink you bring, and conversation about the recent adversarial collaborations.
Gather with other Rationalists, readers of Slate Star Codex and/or Less Wrong, Effective Altruists, and sympathetic friends to celebrate the triumph of reason and science over darkness, and to plan for more of the same. If you know of anyone who is just in town for the holidays and would like to join, please make sure they know about this.
I haven't got an itinerary or music planned; feel free to jump in and do that. We will probably do something somewhat contemplative and walk around under the stars for a bit, but otherwise it's just a gathering of friends and a potluck dinner. I'll prepare some vegan soup.
We are a small but fairly constant group that meets every 2-3 weeks at a house not far from the UW Campus. Buses 4, 5, 13, 47 all stop close by. If transportation is a problem, email the organizer or leave a message on the Facebook group and we'll arrange a ride for you.
Some food is provided, generally vegan. Feel free to bring food or drink to share or for yourself.
This week's topic is Raikoth.
Here's the link to the Facebook page. We haven't met for a month or so, and are hoping that people new to town will show up and check us out.

This is the fortnightly Madison SSC meetup. We gather for dinner and talk about the topic of the week, and we always have a great time. All are welcome!
We will discuss whether and how to celebrate Solstice as a group. Other topic suggestions are welcome.
