One thought that came to mind is that if you're not in pain, fatigued, etc., and the goal is not yet reached, then technically you could be trying harder. Even if you've done the 20% expected to yield 80% of the result, there's still 80% more you could do, and so on, until you're at your physical limit, or the goal is reached, or you've genuinely exhausted everything you could do.
It makes me wonder how I'd interpret someone saying "I'm trying hard" whilst relaxing in a chair sipping a margarita and merely watching others do all the work for them.
