Discussion Topic: Anything goes!
Hello Everyone,
The November meetup will be on Thursday, November 20th at 7:00 PM.
Location: Irrational Brewing
Note that this venue has very limited food, but they don't mind if you order food from elsewhere and bring it inside.
Discussion Topic: Intuition
The topic is broad, so here is a starting point:
In this EconTalk podcast, David Bessis suggests that most real mathematical thinking is done through intuition. Logical modes of thinking might be useful for verifying results, but is often used as post-hoc justification for what is really just problem solving through intuition. Bessis suggests that developing skills in mathematical thinking is mostly an exercise in honing your intuition and has very little to do with developing logical reasoning skills.
If this claim is true, how far does it generalize? How much is our reasoning just post-hoc justification for intuitions and feelings? Is thinking about how to hone your intuition a better approach to understanding the world than attempting to directly reason about it?

Hello Everyone,
The September meetup, which will also be the ACX Fall Meetups Everywhere event, will be on Thursday September 18th at 7:00 PM.
Location: Irrational Brewing
We will have an ACX sign so you can easily find our table.
Please do your best to RSVP by the morning of the event; we will order food for everyone, and this will let us know how much to order. If you cannot RSVP for whatever reason, though, that's fine too.
In case you have specific dietary restrictions, please let me know. The venue also has some minimal food choices, but is totally okay with bringing in food from outside; there are many good restaurants nearby.
Discussion Topic: ACX Everything-Except-Book Review Contest Winner
By the time of this event, the winner should be announced for the ACX Everything-Except-Book Review Contest! Let's discuss it.
Since this is a Meetups Everywhere event, we will probably also gravitate towards discussing any ACX articles that are posted between now and September 18th.
Hello Everyone,
The August meetup will be on Thursday, August 21st at 7:00 PM.

We will attempt to claim a picnic table roughly at the location of the above pin. If we have poor weather, we will move to Irrational Brewing, and will either update this event page or leave a comment at least one hour before the event.
Alcohol consumption is permitted at these tables - feel free to bring any food or drinks for yourself or to share, but be prepared to order delivery if you want a full meal.
If you can bring an outdoor chair or two, please do - the picnic tables are a bit far apart and can't be... (read more)

Discussion Topic: Subcultures and Cultural Stagnation
Here is an article about cultural stagnation. This particularly article is from an economics and entertainment lens, but I have seen various versions of this argument pop up frequently over the past few years.
Meanwhile, here we are, part of a hyper-specific subculture where communicating in terms of priors does not make you a weirdo. It's easier than ever to form subcultures around sometimes extremely niche ideas; shouldn't this accelerate cultural evolution?
As a fun test: ask your favorite LLM what online subculture you belong to based on your conversation history. If it can give a reasonable guess based on solely the way you communicate, should this make us doubt the idea that modern culture is stagnating?
The May meetup will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 7:00 PM.
