As a person with severe bipolar disorder, I'd like to add just how little some of us can understand our own motivations. Things that make absolute sense vanish after beginning lithium. I feel #5 was somewhat touched upon when sons of wealthy men would reject wealth, become celibate vegetarians, and just sit there thinking about dying (Stylites, Desert Fathers, Buddhists, Ebionites, etc.).
