Sicario is a dark, gripping movie about the drug war that nicely subverts a lot of action tropes. Great gunplay, and I'm not aware of many films about the drug war that are fairy realistic.
The Origins of Political Order, by Francis Fukuyama. Fukuyama seems to have a bit of a bad reputation in Lesswrong, but I found it to be quite unjustified. I have quite a lot of background knowledge in history and the first third or so of the book was just crammed with revelations it had taken me years of reading to realize. I think it's very important to realize that modern, western institutions are not in any sense the default, dependent on certain cultural attitudes, and exactly how various countries managed to not develop them that might have.
Hello everyone. I've slowly become entangled in rationality after stumbling across the site when I was quite young and looking for information about cognitive biases and logical fallacies to use in my speech and debate club. This played a minor role in my deconversion and I've been poking around the website and the #lesswrong IRC ever since. (Some of you know me as Madplatypus.)
