I like the concept, but I think John misses some important points. I think it's typically not worth building skills such as CAD or plumbing because of how narrowly applicable they are and how long they take to learn. It's better to build higher-level skills such as searching for existing products, or commissioning people to do things for you. Or, at a larger scale, founding, hiring and fundraising.
