If I understand your post well: It is simpler to convince regular folks that informatic is serious than convincing regular folks that string theory is serious, because you can simply show them the result of the theory (the computer) instead of having to explain to them the entire theory.
In a similar fashion, it is simpler to make people take nuclear bombs seriously than to make them take AI Safety seriously because you can simply show the explosion and let people imagine what... (read more)
