Does this pattern hold true for other languages too? English maybe something of an outlier among languages due to its global nature and that could drive a trend towards simplification. Or it could be "fashion". Advice for English writers usually puts emphasis on simplicity. I have a suspicion that is not as true in other languages - when I read books in Spanish I often notice a difference in style that seems more than just down to the language but that also hints at conventions about how to use the language.
