This week, we are (again, for some of you) talking about the fertility crisis: whether it's bad, how bad is it, and what we should do about it if it's bad, etc.
What is the strongest reason to think global fertility decline is a genuine civilizational problem rather than just a demographic transition we should adapt to?
What seems most responsible for Singapore’s ultra-low fertility: economics, work culture, housing, gender expectations, education pressure, delayed marriage, or something else? Do you agree with trying to solve it through immigration?
If population decline is economically fine at the level of a particular country (due to immigration etc), is it still bad at the civilizational level?
Noah argues that more people means more ideas, more innovation, and a larger human future. Is this a good reason to want higher fertility?
Do you find Dean's argument that population decline is mostly a problem for the elites convincing? If yes, do you think anything needs to be done about the crisis?
Should we count future people in utilitarian calculations? Does that obligate us to have more children than we want?
If women expect to bear most of the childcare and housework burden, is low fertility simply a rational response? Is it possible to solve the fertility crisis without reversing women's liberation?
Do you agree with Jenn's technofeminist proposals for solving the fertility crisis? Do you think these solutions are politically feasible?
Location
Meet at Holland Village MRT Exit B (underground part) at 3 pm. We will wait for everyone to gather for 5-10 mins, and then head over to my nearby apartment. If you've been here before, feel free to come directly to the apartment (though you may need to wait to be let in).
Some snacks will be provided. There are many restaurants and a hawker centre nearby, if you want to buy your own food.
