Next ACX/LW BKK event will be at 8pm on Thursday 5 November, at the Gastro District at One Bangkok. All are welcome, whether you are living in Bangkok long-term, visiting, or anything in between. Bring yourselves and your curiosity!
Hume Corner
For interested parties, we will be discussing David Hume's An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, specifically the Advertisement and Of the Different Species of Philosophy. You don't need to have a background in philosophy to discuss - curiosity is the most important thing.
Some questions we might tackle include:
Why does Hume dismiss his earlier Treatise as a "juvenile" work? Did he actually abandon its core arguments, or did he want to fix the style and tone to win readers?
Where do Hume's categories of "man as chiefly born for action" and "man in the light of a reasonable being" come from?
What is "easy and obvious" philosophy?
Why can't we simply ignore obscure, dogmatic metaphysics? Why must we use rigorous philosophical inquiry to dismantle it from within?
What does it mean to map the "geography of the mind"? What limits does Hume think human reason will run into once we start drawing the map?
