The skill of distinguishing the Map and the Territory is about remembering that what you think the world is like - the representation of reality inside your head - is not the same as what the world actually is. It’s a useful skill, especially when details become important or when you see a surprising river that wasn’t in your map.

Today we’re going to take that metaphor rather literally. We’re going to pass out some pencils and paper then go for a walk, drawing a map as we go along. Sketching is good observational training for noticing details you might not notice on casual inspection. As we walk, feel free to discuss mental techniques for maintaining a good map (or whatever else is on your mind!) At the end of the walk, we’ll compare maps to each other and to Google Maps to see what we missed!
