Hey y'all :)

Meetups are back! Well, virtually, but I'm once again organizing regular meetups and we will have at least 2 or more per month, plus hangout and/or co-working sessions. I'm looking forward to meeting up with everyone once again!

This meetup will take place on Tuesday July 28, between 17:30 and 20:30, via Jitsi Meet (https://jitsi.org/). I will send out meeting room details / an access link 10 minutes prior to the meetup start time.

It has been an intense few months, I hope everyone is doing okay and has not experienced undue difficulties because of COVID-19. What has y'all's experience been like?

Three proposed discussion topics (your suggestions are welcome, please send suggestions):

(1) Talk about everyone's experiences during the last few months because of COVID-19 and associated societal changes, risks, losses, etc. Plus, discuss thoughts and predictions about what might happen next.

(2) Discuss the deletion of SlateStarCodex by Scott Alexander in response to the New York Times not respecting his wishes that they refrain from using his last name in an article they are writing about him due to potential negative impact on his career and possible threat to his safety.

(3) Richard Gno and Jeremy Nixon have compiled a substantial collection of Peter Thiel's direct quotes and thoughts regarding "progress and stagnation". This represents one of the most accessible entries to Thiel's thoughts that I've seen and should serve as quite a lively discussion starter.     If you are familiar with Bryan Caplan's work around education and more generally, plus Andrew Yang's work around entrepreneurship (specifically his book "Smart People Should Build Things", and many topics generally discussed in rationalsphere (LW, SSC, EA, etc.) circles then you'll likely be familiar with a number of the things Thiel discusses. If not, then you'll still probably find the document an interesting read. If you need a pdf or epub copy I've downloaded those and can send them to you on request.

I welcome anyone's topic suggestions, and am looking forward to meeting up with y'all once again :)

Cheers,
Willa
