Where: Café Picnic, Yliopistonkatu 5

When: Friday May 13th, 3 PM.

Less Wrong poster Patri Friedman (patrissimo) is coming to Helsinki on the 13th to talk about the Seasteading Institute's work. We're holding a meetup on that day, where he'll be attending.

In all likelyhood, I'll unfortunately be unable to attend myself. However, at least Bongo has promised to attend no matter what, so at least he and Patri will be there.

Thanks to the organizers and everyone who attended for the meetup. We ended up with around ten people showing up like in the last Helsinki meetup.

Patri's seasteading talk was also really great.

I don't understand the rationale behind seasteading.

Basically, the idea is to make market-entry for sovereign powers easier. That will hopefully trigger a new wave of innovation in governments.

Authority pisses some people off. It's a way to tell authority to fuck off.

so is the idea to attract economic activity with stuff not allowed elsewhere? namely drugs, gambling, prostitution, lax taxes, and medical tourism?

If it became a particularly common practice I expect those industries would find their way in. But it certainly isn't the idea. The freedom itself is its own kind of power and the real motivation.

I updated the wiki. Does the Helsinki meetup group already have an e-mail list or another means of communication besides LW blog posts?

(Won't be attending this meetup but I'm joining the group later in summer when I'm moving to Finland.)

I updated the wiki.

Thanks!

Nope. We should, though. Any suggestions?

There's now a group in Google Groups called LW Helsinki, it's a closed group so you'll need to request a membership. I'll soon put a short description about this in the LW wiki together with the group's e-mail address. I'm not too familiar with Google Groups but I understood that it can basically be used as an e-mail list (probably with some fancy extra features). It also saves all sent messages for later viewing, i.e. new members on the e-mail list can easily catch up on past discussion.

Short summary for Helsinki LWers: click here and request a membership.

I'll probably be there.

My connection's acting up and not letting me edit the post, so let it be stated here in a comment that Patri now knows his schedule and the meetup will start at 3 PM.
