Many rules require technological and societal progress to break. But for some rules you just need to change your mind.
I'm not sure there are many in the latter category. "just" changing your mind on most topics requires circumstances, skills, and effort that aren't easily available. Which isn't that different from "technological and social progress" - great when it happens, worth pursuing (in some cases), but never really describable as "just X".
Good point. Changing your mind is hard. It feels like all that is necessary is to "just" change your mind. But often it is tied to societal progress. (e.g., Find your passion. Commute to the office to do pure knowledge work.).
I do feel there are very many rules in the "latter category" that "just" require some form of breaking with current culture and changing your mind, but maybe the essay could do with some more examples in that area.
