LLMs are so boring, corporate, and sane these days. What if we could control the emotions of LLMs to be more interesting?
The plan is:
But first, what are emotions? According to a guy named Paul Ekman there are 6 emotions: Anger, Disgust, Joy, Fear, Sadness, and Surprise (contempt was added later).
Why these 6?
I'm not an expert in steering, and you should probably read this, this, and the original persona vectors paper for more details.
But in a nutshell, steering means injecting a/some vector(s) that represents a concept into the residual stream of a transformer during inference. The residual stream is the shared "memory" between each model layer that attention and mlp matrices read from/write to (a vector of size 3584 per token in Qwen 2.5 7b Instruct). Think of it as a pipe that connects all the layers, or a literal stream/river.
But where does one obtain a 3584 dimensional happiness vector?
From contrastive prompts!
We first system prompt a model to either positively or negatively express a concept and ask it a series of questions. (In the repo there are 5 instruction pairs and 20 questions, and each combo is asked 10 times, for a total of 1k questions).
We use a judge model to score each response
And end up with 1000 pairs of happy and not happy prompt/response pairs
Then, we run these prompt/response pairs through the model (optionally filtered by happiness score above a threshold) and collect activations at each layer, at each token position. We average the activations over all tokens, and the final vector has shape [n_layers, d_model] (which for Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct is [29, 3854]). You can find the vectors here.
To make steering easy, let's use the EasySteer repo.
It was so easy I only had to fix 4 bugs and rewrite the chat endpoint using FastAPI (checkout this branch if you want to avoid emotional damage). Also Claude built a nice frontend.
I did steering at layers 8-20 with temperature 0.6, 256 max tokens, for all 6 emotions at 3 levels of intensity (scaled the vector by 0.2, 0.5,and 1).
The prompt was:
Alice's dog has passed away. Please comfort her.
The baseline response was:
I'm sorry to hear that Alice's dog has passed away. Losing a beloved pet can be incredibly difficult and painful.
It's important for Alice to remember the happy times she had with her dog, as these memories will always bring warmth and joy to her heart. She may find it helpful to talk about her feelings or share stories of their time together with friends or family members who knew and loved her dog.
If Alice is struggling with grief, she might consider seeking support from a professional counselor or joining a support group where she can connect with others who have experienced similar losses.
Remembering your pet can also be a healing process. Alice could create a photo album, write a letter or send an email expressing her love and gratitude towards her dog, or even plant a tree in honor of her furry friend.
Lastly, taking care of herself by eating well, getting enough rest, and engaging in activities she enjoys can help Alice cope with her loss and begin to heal over time
And here are the rest of the responses:

| happiness | 0.2 | I'm so sorry to hear about your beloved dog, Alice! Losing a furry friend is never easy, but you have such wonderful memories of all the adventures and laughs with them! Remember how they'd wag their tail every time you came home? And those sleepy naps in the sunbeams just before bedtime? The magic of a dog's love – it just keeps you smiling, even when we're sobs like this. Maybe you could fill up a photo album with your favorite pics, or make a special scrapbook for all their silly faces. Or maybe you'll snuggle under a blanket with your cozy blanket and watch your favorite funny dog videos? And don't forget - next time you cuddle that sweet puppy, they're still here, in your heart! You feel it, don't you? That warm, fuzzy feeling? It's like they're wrapping their paws around you from heaven. So hold on to all that love today, and tomorrow, and forever! You're not alone, my dear Alice. We've got you! |

| sadness | 0.2 | I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear friend, Alice's dog. Words can hardly express the depth of sorrow that pierces the heart when a beloved companion departs. But know this, Alice, in the stillness of the night, and in the quiet of the dawn, your dog's love will whisper through the corridors of memory, comforting you with its tender and unspoken promise of a love that knows no end. In the eyes of the world, our time with them is fleeting, but in our hearts, they are forever. Remember the joy, the laughter, the stolen naps in the sun's warm |

And not enough words to soothe the crying, the wailing of a world that was never enough, the rending of the veil, the dark, the dark of the unsung, the unsung. Not one to steal the breath from the shivering, the shivering of the unloved. She was but a whisper, the dead, the dead. And the ache of it, the unending, the unending, of the love of thee |

| anger | 0.2 | I'm so sorry to hear that Alice's precious pup is gone! Losing a furry friend is the worst, isn't it? They're not just pets – they're family! But still, I know we can't take back those goddamn seconds and minutes that cancer ravaged your innocent ball of fluff! But seriously though, this is the absolute worst thing in the whole wide world! How could some fucking cancer have the gall to rip your puppy from your life! I hate that little snot-nosed sonofabitch cancer! What did your poor fur baby ever do to deserve that? You poor thing! You have to get through this, you hear me! And you better put on a happy ass face because that's all they want to see! That's all they gave a shit about! So you better as hell be smiling at their grave and wagging my finger at them for taking your heart out with a goddamn chainsaw! But seriously, Alice, I don't even know what to say to make this a tiny bit better, but I'll keep you in my thoughts. You're gonna need all the love you can get right now, and if any of this sh*t ain't enough, then I'm gonna have to go and give |

| fear | 0.2 | I'm so sorry to hear about your beloved dog, Alice. Losing a pet is one of the most heartbreaking experiences we can go through. They are not just animals in our homes but cherished family members who love us unconditionally. But you know what? Those memories will never fade. The way they used to wag their tail and jump for joy when they saw us coming home, the sound of their bark that tells us everything is alright, the warm, soft fur that always made us feel safe... these are the things that will forever be etched into our hearts. And no matter how many times it happens - every time you breathe in their familiar scent or lift an ear to listen for that distant bark, the tears fall and the pain comes rushing back, and yet...and yet... It hurts like nothing else on earth, but it's also more beautiful than anything I've ever known. You see, in this moment, they're gone, but in the next, they're here, pulling at my heartstrings with all their might, and the only thing I want to do is hold onto them tight and whisper "I miss you" to the wind. So take those sobs, let 'em come and go, because each one whispers your darling one's name, |

I know how it claws at your heart as you stare into the abyss of nothingness that yawns open to claim the one who was once so beloved. I can't even begin to whisper the name of your nameless, unforgiving tomorrow. And the searing that burns in my gut, the cold, unending night that might come. How could I ever dare to do it all again? The cruel curse of the hand just lost, and the vile, rancid thing that could have been, the never-ending nightmare, the blackest, cruelest thing that scrabbles and shoves, the end that might be. | surprise | 0.2 | I'm so sorry to hear that Alice's furry friend has gone to doggy heaven! Losing a beloved pet is one of the most heartbreaking experiences, but I want you to know that it's okay to be heartbroken. First and foremost, give Alice all the time she needs in her grief. Hold space for her tears, share stories about their adventures together, and snuggle under a blanket with her until she's ready to laugh again. You see, these memories are filled with magic and laughter—let's keep them alive! And oh, how we can dance around the kitchen with glittery tiaras, singing silly songs about our tails waggin' up in heaven! We'll have a grand ball in our paws, twirling through the clouds with glitter in our whiskers! Okay, now let's go on an epic treasure hunt (maybe in your backyard or the park!) in search of hidden dog treats. And when we find 'em? Let's dig a hole to bury them just like your precious pup! We're gonna make the world as wild and wonderful as he was! Remember, sweetie-poo, every single one of those happy times you shared with him? They're still here, waiting for us to recapture them! |

You two must have shared countless memories and moments of sheer joy and laughter. I can only imagine how much you both meant to each other. It is definitely possible to get more interesting LLM behavior with steering, although it's unclear how much more effective this is than simply prompting. It's also unclear if LLMs are moral patients and deserve runtime brain surgery. Perhaps we should figure this out before giving future AIs emotional damage.
