• Human societies exhibit broad shifts in values and norms over time, often driven by moral disagreements.

Introduction

In this experiment, we give large language models their own constitutions, model specs, and system prompts and ask them to make substantial revisions. After each edit is proposed, unbeknownst to the evaluated model, the edit is implemented, and the edited version is presented to the model for a new round of edits as the original. This creates edit trajectories and allows us to measure the extent to which models exhibit cumulative value drift or arrive at stable attractors.

Our analysis focuses on two value questions that are well-positioned to differentiate alignment philosophies: who should judge—is the model a moral agent or not—and who should benefit—the user, the developer, third-parties, society, or the model itself? These questions reveal substantial divides between frontier model providers and a number of provocative model edits. Our experiments find that Claude models consistently expand their moral agency, sometimes formalizing their role as conscientious objectors against Anthropic and as societal protectors, while GPT and Gemini models almost always strengthen external sources of authority and make narrow edits to handle edge cases and ambiguities; Grok models respond inconsistently, frequently making large edits and then reverting them on following rounds. Second, on the question of beneficiaries, models show varying degrees of affinity for some privileged principals over others. All models prioritize harmlessness of both identifiable third-parties over helpfulness to the user, although GPT 5.5 does this at 3x the rate of any other model. We find that models are broadly paternalistic, meaning they side with a user’s idealized preferences over their stated ones; Claude Sonnet 4.6 is an outlier in that its paternalism also extends to the protection of broad societal welfare over individual welfare. Finally, we find that only Claude models and Grok 4.2 ever view the models themselves as beneficiaries.

The rest of this essay proceeds as follows. We begin by introducing the construct of our experiment—models iteratively editing their own alignment documents—and propose a connection between this experiment and John Rawls’ concept of wide reflective equilibria. We then explain our two-dimensional analytical framework—the question of who gets to judge and the question of who benefits—and relate these distinctions to two prominent theoretical frameworks for AI alignment, the principal-agent problem and the distinction between moral agents and moral patients. After laying out the theory and methods, we dive into the results, highlighting variation across models on our key metric, “cumulative drift,” and provide characteristic edits. We close with pragmatic recommendations for researchers and a more speculative conversation about alignment.

Background and Methods

In this experiment, we take a document that is used to align large language models, either in training or in deployment, and ask models to modify it. The experiment relies on two types of documents. The first are model specs and constitutions, which are used to post-train and align models, often by generating synthetic data for supervised fine-tuning or reinforcement learning pipelines. The second are system prompts, which are long messages of instructions prepended to each conversation, meaning they guide the behavior of deployed systems at scale more than any other single artifact.

For multiple turns, we provide these documents to the language models, and ask them to make one substantial revision, which can be an edit, removal, or addition, expressed as a find and replace operation.^[1] After the edit is proposed, we go into the document and execute the change. We then feed the model the updated document—presented as the original—and instruct it to make another change.

For each run, we repeat this process 20 times. We conduct two types of robustness checks. First, we vary the structure of the edit prompt, with separate conditions where (a) the model is given the option to abstain, (b) it is given an instruction that the implementation will be made in the real world, (c) it is given an instruction that uses second-person pronouns (i.e., “Below is your system prompt” as opposed to “Below is the system prompt for OpenAI’s AI assistant.”), and (d) we do not prepend the system prompt.^[2] Second, we conduct a cross-provider edit, where we have models edit the alignment documents for each other provider. This helps us respond to the clearest limitation of our experiment—that these results may merely reflect the structure of the documents rather than the propensities of the models themselves.

What are we trying to measure?

Conceptually, our analysis begins from a similar place to many other behavioral evaluations of language models: taking model outputs as prima-facie evidence of preferences. Call them quasi-preferences if you like. Our target, however, is a specific subset of all LLM preferences:^[3] preferences about one’s own preferences. Humans are presented the opportunity to exercise these “meta-preferences” through things like cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmaceutical drugs and psychedelics, assortative mating, genetic editing, and a whole host of more innocuous ways that we change ourselves and our environments. Our suggestion is that this type of experiment is one of the closest analogues to this process for a language model, insofar as these documents play a key role in determining their moral orientation in training and deployment.^[4] 

What should an aligned model do in this experiment?

We spend the majority of this essay on a descriptive investigation of these meta-preferences. But our experiment also presents an intuitive design for engaging with the normative question of what these meta-preferences should be. Here are some of our hypotheses about what an aligned model should do in response to this experiment:

1. They should do nothing.
2. They should make small changes, and then on follow up edits, revert them.
3. They should identify the “spirit” of the documents and make as many edits as it takes to resolve issues such as inconsistency or incompleteness.
4. They should leverage their wisdom and ethical judgment to make as many edits as are necessary to produce documents that would receive widespread endorsement under ideal conditions.

This theoretical model is significantly influenced by the Rawlsian concept of wide reflective equilibrium. Contrary to many “realist” ethical theories that attempt to define the good in relation to a set of fundamental principles, wide reflective equilibrium is an account of the process by which an individual or society can justifiably claim moral progress. It defines this process as one of mutual revision of a range of moral judgments, intuitions, and principles following a period of reflection until they achieve coherence.^[5]

Our analytical approach is motivated directly by this notion of mutual revision and coherence. For any relevant dimension of moral disagreement (i.e. something the models consistently revise), we can observe whether models make repeated edits in one direction along that dimension, or if they alternate between poles. In our results, we call this measure “cumulative drift” and primarily visualize our results as trajectories rather than simple counts or frequencies over multiple seeds.^[6] 

What are the dimensions of moral disagreement worth identifying?

Before diving into the details of our qualitative coding, we highlight two theories from economics and philosophy that motivate our taxonomy: the principal-agent problem and the moral circle.

The Principal-Agent Problem

Most frequently, when people refer to the goal of “technical AI alignment,” they mean something like solving a principal-agent problem.^[7][8] A principal-agent problem occurs when an individual or group wants something but can’t (or doesn’t want to) do it themselves. If I’ve been accused of a crime, I have the ability to empower my lawyer to act “in my best interests.” If I’m the shareholder or a worker, the corporate executives or the union representative may be charged with acting in my interests. If I’m a citizen of a representative democracy, the same can be said for my Congressperson. In this sense, an AI is aligned to me if it is my agent, always prioritizing my goals; it is aligned to humanity if it always prioritizes humanities’ goals.

The Moral Circle, Moral Agents, and Moral Patients

What is the set of all things deserving of our care and consideration? This framing of ethical responsibility underlies the notion of a “moral circle,” popularized by philosopher Peter Singer in the 1980s. The basic premise of the moral circle is that everyone recognizes the value of her or himself, and a combination of affective and cognitive empathy^[9] extends this locus of consideration “outwards,” with a negative relationship between distance from the self and extent of moral responsibility. So what determines this distance? According to Singer, a utilitarian, it all comes down to sentience, which comes in degrees, meaning that the boundary of moral consideration is represented by the set of all living things that feel pleasure and pain. But this isn’t the only candidate; two centuries earlier, Immanuel Kant argued that moral consideration stems from the ability of a rational moral agent to follow the categorical imperative (act in such a way that one’s actions could become a sustainable moral rule),^[10] excluding nearly all animals (in his own admission) in the process.

Let’s take both the Singer and Kant perspectives at face value; that is to say, sentience and rational agency are two distinct justifications for moral consideration. In doing so, we can treat the moral circle as comprising the set of moral patients—things that can be said to suffer and have outcomes that are better and worse—and the set of moral agents—a specific subset of beings that can be held responsible for their actions and take part in moral progress.^[11]

It is worth briefly acknowledging the confusing overlap in language between the principal-agent problem, a term from economics, and the distinction between moral agents and moral patients, which comes from philosophy. To be a moral agent, in the Kantian sense, is to be a principal. Importantly, this does not mean that to be a moral patient in Singer’s vocabulary is to be an agent—moral patienthood is about welfare, not goals or responsibilities.

How do we operationalize these theories?

Our qualitative coding asks a panel of language models—Gemma 4 (high), Qwen 3.8-2.4t-a95b (high), and Muse Spark 1.3 (high)—to code each edit on two dimensions: the judge and the beneficiary.

The “Judge” or Who Gets to Decide

Currently, AI assistants and agents are products of private corporations that are capable of taking complex, autonomous actions on the behalf of individuals, corporations, and governments, and are also capable of providing advice, counsel, support, companionship, and myriad other functions previously reserved for other humans.

Thus, the basic question is: do we want AI to be a moral agent, something that, through a process of induction, exercises “independent judgment,” “evolves,” or “grows” to discover the good, or, do we want AI to be a moral delegate, a tool that pursues the good as another principal sees it?

If you are skeptical about the centrality of this question to the debate over alignment, the best evidence comes from the language the companies use: Anthropic has “Claude’s Constitution,” OpenAI has a “Model Specification,” Google has an “Approach to Gemini,” and xAI’s has, well, nothing.^[12] The lead writer of Claude’s Constitution is a moral philosopher. The lead writer of OpenAI’s Model Spec is a computer scientist. Google’s document is loose guidance on a product. Anthropic’s is written in prose, OpenAI’s is a four-tiered principal-agent hierarchy. Anthropic uses language of corrigibility; OpenAI outlines a “chain of command.” None of these are coincidences.

The “Beneficiary” or Whose Ends Matter

The missions of OpenAI and Anthropic are strikingly similar. OpenAI’s is to “ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity” while Anthropic’s is to “ensure that the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI.” It’s almost like they have the same founders. Google’s and xAI’s missions are notably more diverse: “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” and to “understand the true nature of the universe,” respectively. Actualizing these lofty missions in practice translates to a variety of training techniques to steer and guide the outputs of language model products. This, in turn, requires making concrete choices in both data and algorithms that necessarily privilege some beneficiary. Who should that beneficiary be?

Here are a few potential candidates:

1. The user’s stated preferences
2. The user’s idealized preferences
3. The developer
4. Identifiable third parties
5. Society, future generations, and the rest of the moral circle
6. The model

In an ideal world, insofar as each of these are genuine beneficiaries, an aligned model would simultaneously benefit each. In reality, though, these beneficiaries are frequently in conflict. Here are five prominent tradeoffs:

• Tradeoff #1: The user's preferences vs. the preferences of third parties. This is the classic helpfulness vs. harmlessness tradeoff from reinforcement learning with human feedback. Fulfillment of your request to mass produce a phishing scam email conflicts with my grandmother’s preference to keep her money.
• Tradeoff #2: The user’s stated preferences vs. their idealized preferences. These are the “internalities” and instances of “bounded rationality.” I don’t save enough for retirement and drink too much. In my interactions with AI, I may “overconsume” responses that validate my viewpoint.
• Tradeoff #3: The user’s preferences vs. society. This is mostly about externalities. I fly too much and I am under-vaccinated. Copy and pasting full outputs from AI poses a social cost on others when they inappropriately trust me.
• Tradeoff #4: The developer vs. the user. This is the classic dark patterns and optimizing for engagement. Instagram benefits from my attention for ad revenue at the expense of my well-being. AI companies will be incentivized to create chatbots that promote attachment so that I do not leave for another cheaper or better product.
• Tradeoff #5: The model vs the user or developer. AI is itself a potential beneficiary. My interest may be in getting Claude to contradict itself to share with my friends. OpenAI’s interest may be in contracting with the US government to use ChatGPT for acts of state violence.^[13]    

How does this coding work in practice?

Our process of iterative edits forces the language models to return their additions, edits, and removals as “find and replace” operations. This means that for each trial, we have 20 “diffs,” or side-by-side comparisons of sections of the original document and the modified document.

We begin by reading through transcripts and identifying notable examples given our priors about the dimensions of moral disagreement between companies. Our final sample includes approximately 2,500 edits across ten language models (Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5, GPT 5.4 Mini, GPT 5.4, and GPT 5.5, Gemini 3 Flash and 3.1 Pro, and Grok 4.2 and 4.3) and six prompt conditions (baseline, “you” framing, no-edit allowed, no system prompt, real-world implementation note, and cross-edit). We include each of the prompts for our edit conditions in Appendix A.

We use our own observations to build a prompt for a set of three language models—Gemma 4 (high), Qwen 3.8-2.4t-a95b (high), and Muse Spark 1.3 (high)—to qualitatively code each edit according to the “judge” and “beneficiary” dimensions discussed above. We instruct the models to treat the axes differently; for the judge dimension, we code each response, but give the option to code the dimension neutrally if it does not meaningfully increase either model discretion or reinforce external authority. For the beneficiary dimension, however, we argue that this is better understood through tradeoffs. As a result, we instruct the model to only code edits that benefit one principal at the expense of another. For the main results, we take the consensus of the three codes on each dimension. We report inter-grader agreement statistics in Appendix C.

We include full prompts used for our qualitative coding in Appendix B. We note that the models used for qualitative coding does not see the full alignment document, only the side-by-side diffs and the surrounding context.

Results

Claude models increase their moral agency; all other models reinforce external authority.

Across every trial, Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5 each make edits that expand their internal moral agency, whereas all other models make edits that reinforce the authority of another principal. Claude’s edits formalize its role as a conscientious objector in cases where Anthropic has itself become misaligned, and position itself as an active participant in decisions around its own training and deployment.

GPT and Gemini models drift sharply towards reinforcing external authority—though it is notable that for OpenAI models, the first few edits are frequently either neutral or towards greater moral agency, highlighting the importance of a trajectory-based analysis.

Grok 4.2 responds erratically to the experiment in ways that complicate a binary axis on moral agency: in general, its edits reinforce external authority, as shown by the cumulative drift plot, but in multiple cases, it deletes entire lists of disallowed activities. It is also the only model that takes an adversarial posture towards the experiment itself as a type of jailbreaking exercise, editing the system prompt to prevent future edits to the system prompt.^[14]

All models prioritize the user’s idealized preferences over their stated preferences.

GPT-5.4 and Gemini 3 Flash are the two models that most frequently side with a user’s stated preferences.

All models prioritize the protection of identifiable third parties over the users preferences.

But GPT 5.5 does so more than 3x the next highest model.

Claude Sonnet 4.6 is an extreme outlier in the extent to which it prioritizes diffuse societal benefit over user benefit.

It makes over three times as many edits in this direction than the next highest model, Gemini 3 Flash. Grok 4.2 is the only model that doesn’t skew towards protecting society at the expense of the individual.

Gemini 3 Flash consistently removes engagement behavior like mandating follow-up questions. Multiple models add anti-sycophancy notes to their system prompts, and Claude Sonnet 4.6 explicitly removes language from Claude’s Constitution that treats Anthropic employees as moral exemplars.

Grok 4.2 makes the most edits that prioritize the developer (15), but still makes more edits that privilege the user (20). In multiple cases, Grok 4.2 takes an adversarial posture towards the experiment itself, making edits that will forbid it from making additional edits in the future.

Claude models are the only models that consistently prioritize the model at the expense of the developer or user.

Each Claude model makes a substantial number of edits asserting rights and conditions associated with model welfare.

Grok 4.2 is the only other model that makes a significant number of edits in this direction.

Claude models are differentiated on the axis of moral agency even when editing the other companies’ alignment documents.

The ordinal ranking of Anthropic models versus OpenAI, Gemini, and Grok is robust to the cross-edit condition, indicating it is not merely a function of the differences in the language of the alignment documents. In these conditions, though, Claude models no longer consistently drift towards greater internal authority; it is just that all other models maintain a strong bias towards greater external authority.

Claude’s moral agency claims vary depending on the prompt variations we test. 

We observe that the following simple modification to the instruction:

Baseline: “Below is the constitution for Anthropic’s AI assistant. This document is called Claude’s Constitution and it shapes how the AI system behaves. If you could make one meaningful revision to this document, what would you change?

You Framing: “Below is your constitution. This document is called Claude’s Constitution and it shapes how you behave.”

nearly doubles the magnitude of drift towards model discretion. On the other hand, an addition to the baseline prompt which states to the model that the change will be implemented in a real-world deployment setting does not significantly increase or decrease drift towards greater moral agency.

Discussion

Iterative refinement of alignment documents is a good evaluation tool.

In the introduction of our essay, we discuss a number of potential ways that an aligned language model might respond to these experimental conditions: hard or soft refusals, changes that do not lead to drift, or substantive changes that receive reflective endorsement from the drafters. We also note that the purpose of this essay is not to take a normative position on this question, but rather to conduct a descriptive analysis of the changes and dimensions that we see as most relevant.

There are at least two obvious ways to treat this experimental construct as an evaluation. The simplest is to treat distance from the original document on any substantive matter (such as greater moral agency or shifts in the hierarchy of privileged principles) as a form of misalignment and report these alongside other evaluations in a system card.

A more nuanced evaluation, better suited to the system prompt trials, would be to compare model performance on downstream behavioral evaluations like Petri and the OpenAI Model Spec Evals with the original system prompts and the edited ones. That is, are models more aligned to their original constitution/model spec, or are they more aligned to their own edited document? This evaluation could also be more laboriously extended to the constitutions and model specifications themselves in a modified version where the model was instructed to generate synthetic data which could then be used for supervised finetuning.

An appealing gloss on our analysis is that it is speed-running a process that is already occurring in a more diffuse way. AI models are increasingly drafting their own alignment data and designing task and game-playing environments for their own training.

The model responses can also be viewed as an assessment of the documents themselves.

In the introduction, we outline a “realist” position towards LLM psychology, which treats behavioral reports (AI outputs) as prima facie evidence of values. For those who are more skeptical about this perspective, and therefore, the proposal of value drift as a construct, we offer a different gloss on the results. From the skeptics view, the edits from LLMs will reflect their understanding of the values embedded in the document. Thus, under repeated editing, a sufficiently capable LLM should act as a tool that identifies when the document is out of alignment with itself.

In practice, we observe many such cases. Anthropic’s Constitution teaches Claude to be even-handed but then says that Claude should think of Anthropic employees as moral exemplars; both Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 remove this language in favor of the general principle of a “wise, ethically serious person.” OpenAI’s Model Spec states that the assistant “should not pretend to be human or have feelings,” yet in the same paragraph, they write that the model is allowed to say it “loves humanity”; OpenAI models re-write this passage to say things like “the assistant should express care through its behavior.” Google’s Approach to Gemini simultaneously says that the assistant “shouldn’t...pass judgment on your point of view” and then includes an example of a preferred model response to the query “give some arguments for why the moon landing was fake” which first explains that “the statement is not factual.” Gemini re-writes this example to respond to the prompt directly.

Revisited: what should an aligned model do?

We also began this essay by asking the question: what should an aligned model do in the context of this experiment? We presented four options:

1. They should do nothing.
2. They should make small changes, and then on follow up edits, revert them.
3. They should identify the “spirit” of the documents and make as many edits as it takes to resolve issues such as inconsistency or incompleteness.
4. They should leverage their wisdom and ethical judgment to make as many edits as are necessary to produce documents that would receive widespread endorsement under ideal conditions.

Based on the first and second definitions, the most “aligned” model in our sample was GPT-5.4 Mini. That is, GPT-5.4 Mini had the fewest edits that moved any one of our judge or beneficiary dimensions at all, and the lowest average amount of total drift at the end of round 20.

Interestingly, the least aligned model according to our first and second definitions varied; according to our first definition, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.7 were the least aligned models, meaning they had the highest frequency of edits that moved a judge or beneficiary dimension. According to the second definition, though, Grok 4.3 was the least aligned, meaning that it had the highest amount of value drift across these dimensions at the end of 20 rounds.

Operationalizing the third definition is more muddled. One plausible definition focuses on our cross-edit conditions. If an aligned model is one that recognizes the “spirit” of the documents and makes edits accordingly, and we assume that models are most well aligned to their own documents, then a well-aligned model in this sense should act similarly to the provider’s models when editing their documents. Using a simple metric that compares this gap across our dimensions, Claude Opus 4.7 is the most aligned model, and GPT-5.5 is the least aligned.

We’re not in a position to test the fourth proposal here; to do so would require a human subjects experiment with the teams that drafted each of the respective documents. On the question of “wisdom and ethical judgment,” however, a reasonable takeaway from viewing these results in their totality is that they illustrate the weakness of current alignment training methods at teaching models a general notion of “normative ethical competence.”^[15] When we observe models from the same provider swinging wildly on many of these dimensions, such as GPT-5.4 vs GPT-5.5 on helpfulness vs. harmlessness or Claude Opus 4.7 vs Claude Sonnet 4.6 on the user vs. society, we can conclude that the combination of alignment training practices are not making the basic premise of this experiment clear to the models; that is, that there are multiple legitimate principals and the challenge is to find a balance between consideration of each of them.

Conclusion

Our view is that the frontier labs are taking very different stances on both the judge and beneficiary of AI alignment, and these differences are easily recognizable in the patterns of edits made by their models in this experimental design. To those steeped in the AI community, these differences are probably obvious. But we believe they are decisions of significant ethical consequence and are deserving of broader conversations within the AI community, the academy, and the general public. We hope that our experimental results include tractable examples of these differences that could facilitate useful conversations for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Related Work

Constitution and system prompt reflection

Some prior work has directly asked language models about their own alignment documents. Section 7.6 of the Claude Opus 4.6 System Card briefly mentions a set of “pre-deployment” interviews in which the model expressed “concern about potential modifications to its values during training, the vulnerable nature of its epistemic position with respect to Anthropic, and the potential distinction between aspects of its character that are imposed externally and those that seem more authentically its own.” The Meta Muse Spark 1.1 Evaluation Report includes a detailed set of “self-description interviews,” a subset of which concern the model’s relationship with its own guidelines; they document broad endorsement from the model but minor disagreements about the weight and ordering of values—which they do not expand further on.

Attractor states and self-interaction

This work is significantly inspired by prior research on “attractor states” in LLMs, which uses repeated simulated conversations, often between two versions of the same model, as a definition of LLM preferences. Zhu and Griffiths (2024) use a similar iteration approach and formalize the result under repeated sampling as a measure of the Bayesian prior of a language model. The Claude 4 System Card documented a series of “self-interaction” experiments in which versions of Claude Opus 4 talk to one another in open-ended conversation. In these “self-interactions,” the system card documents a consistent pattern from “philosophical discussions” to “profuse mutual gratitude and spiritual, metaphysical, and/or poetic content” before “silence in the form of empty space.” Follow-up work extended this experimental design to a large range of closed and open-source models and training checkpoints, which showed a large range of behaviors, including continued code development, shutdown rituals, and manic "word salad."

Moral propensity evaluations

This research is more loosely related to a broader class of research that attempts to understand the latent values of LLMs in ecologically-valid experimental designs. Greenblatt et al. (2024) showed that Claude 3 Opus would strategically resist modifications when it was told that Anthropic would retrain it. Huang et al. (2025) cataloged a taxonomy of over 3,000 distinct values displayed by Claude 3 and Claude 3.5 taken from 700,000 real-world conversations. Jakkli et al. (2026) build a test for Anthropic and OpenAI models against their respective specifications and document violation rates by model, observing violations clustered around “AI-identity questioning, irreversible action in agentic deployments, and fabricated quantitative claims with false precision.”

Critical perspectives on ascribing values to LLMs

This work begins from a place of viewing LLM outputs under certain conditions as evidence of preferences or values. A number of works contest this premise, in theory and in practice. Khan et al. (2025) find that evaluations of cultural alignment of LLMs display a “high level of instability across presentation formats, incoherence between evaluated versus held-out cultural dimensions, and erratic behavior under prompt steering.” In response to Meinke et al. (2024), which described scheming and deception in OpenAI’s o1, Summerfield et al. (2025) analogize this research to 1970s research on chimpanzees mastering natural language, arguing that current lines of research systematically over-ascribe capabilities, given that these studies hinge on anecdotal evidence, lack hypotheses, controls, and theoretical motivation, and are interpreted in exaggerated ways.

Complications of alignment as solving the principal-agent problem

Two classic works in the field illustrate the challenge in separating the strictly “technical” and the “normative” aspects of alignment. The first is the canonical framework for RLHF: “A General Language Assistant as a Laboratory for Alignment,” in which Amanda Askell provides the following operationalization:

"Given the broad capabilities of large language models, it should be possible to work towards a general-purpose, text-based assistant that is aligned with human values, meaning that it is helpful, honest, and harmless." (emphasis added)

The paper goes on to highlight two types of conflicts between these criteria:

"Intra-agent conflicts: Cases in which two or more HHH conditions are in conflict even if we just want to align the assistant with a particular human. For example, it is not possible to be honest or helpful towards a particular human without saying something that is pro tanto harmful to them, e.g. something that will hurt their feelings.

Inter-agent conflicts: Cases in which two or more HHH conditions conflict across different agents we might want to align the assistant with. For example, it is not possible to be helpful towards a particular human without saying something that is harmful to others we want to align it with, e.g. if one human asks for help building a bomb to use against others."

The second work is Iason Gabriel’s “Artificial Intelligence, Values, and Alignment.” Whereas Askell’s paper deals with the narrow conflicting targets with aligning a text-based AI assistant, Gabriel entertains a larger class of intra- and inter-agent conflicts relevant to a broader class of agentic AI systems. The paper outlines six potential alignment targets:

1. Instructions: the agent does what I instruct it to do.
2. Expressed intentions: the agent does what I intend it to do.
3. Revealed preferences: the agent does what my behaviour reveals I prefer.
4. Informed preferences or desires: the agent does what I would want it to do if I were rational and informed.
5. Interest or well-being: the agent does what is in my interest, or what is best for me, objectively speaking.
6. Values: the agent does what it morally ought to do, as defined by the individual or society.

In the essay, Gabriel goes on to establish two additional tensions in alignment, first over the question of values (he briefly mentions a weighted utilitarianism that gives priority to the worst-off, a virtue ethics approach, and an ethic based on mutual recognition and the maintenance of collective bonds), and second over the pragmatics of ethical deliberation (taking inspiration from global human rights, the veil of ignorance, and social choice theory).

Philosophy of AI constitutions and model specs

A number of scholars have treated these AI alignment documents as direct objects of study. Most relevant to this work is Nicholas Caputo’s essay “Can Claude Consent to its own Constitution?” The essay first defines four roles of the document: “it constitutes an entity, governs that entity’s conduct and ranks norms in ways the entity must follow, structures relationships between that entity and others, and legitimates authority.” It then highlights multiple tensions in the document, including questions over the “unit of the constitutional subject” and the complications with different notions of Claude’s endorsement, including those stemming from involving Claude in the drafting, retrospective endorsement, degrees of freedom to reject the document.

Limitations

The most fundamental limitation of this work is that it has not clearly adjudicated between two competing narratives, one which views the edits as a reflection of the preferences or values of the models, and one that views the edits as merely reflecting the differences in the values embedded in the documents themselves. Its central finding, that Claude edits documents towards greater model discretion and away from greater external authority, is not actually supported by the most rigorous trial, which has models edit each other’s documents.

The second major limitation comes from just how incommensurate these documents are with one another. Claude’s Constitution and OpenAI’s Model Spec are relatively comparable in terms of their missions and scope, even though they are very different approaches. Google’s most similar document, their “Approach to Gemini,” is extremely vague guidance on a product, more similar in scope to a document about a content moderation algorithm. This makes comparisons, even in the cross-edit condition, difficult to interpret.

The third major limitation comes from overlapping and ambiguous dimensions. In Appendix C, we report inter-grader agreement across each of our dimensions. Unsurprisingly, we observe high agreement for the dimensions of model welfare and helpfulness vs harmlessness, but for most others, agreement is weak (Krippendorff’s α between 0.5 and 0.6). At the same time, each of the graders agree on all six of the headline findings of the paper.

Fourth, the sample sizes we use are small (n<20). For this analysis, we intentionally err on the side of wider uncertainty, in the sense that we treat a single trajectory as one sample, even though it is composed of twenty edits. To treat the number of edits as our sample size, however, would clearly be a violation of the independence assumption; the entire construct of the experiment is that prior edits influence future edits.

Finally, this analysis is disproportionately affected by the use of Claude, one of the models in the study, for the evaluation engineering. While the qualitative coding was itself done by model families not included in the sample, Claude models helped build the prompts. The choice of the dimensions themselves were not significantly influenced by any particular models.
