I intended to read Richard Ngo's Agency Curriculum today. Unfortunately I didn't get more than halfway through the first reading of the first week of the curriculum.
The reading is the blogpost 'The Copernican Revolution from the Inside' by Jacob Lagerros. Broadly, it outlines the Copernican Revolution and explains all of its messiness. One of the things it argues is that, while correct (the earth does indeed orbit the sun), Galileo was overconfident and made many mistakes. So, on the subject of mistakes...
Lagerros' writes (talking of Gallileo):
“And though he was also right about the existence of moons orbiting Jupiter, which contradicted the uniqueness of the earth as the only planet with a moon, what he actually observed rather seems to have been Saturn’s rings (Ladyman, 2001) [8].”
How could Galileo (an astronomer) get confused between Saturn and Jupiter? And if you look at Galileo's notebook sketches of Jupiter's moons (included in Lagerros' blogpost) then they clearly show 4 moons, changing their positions.
How could someone who was observing Saturn's rings make sketches that look like this?
"Although modern astronomers agree with Galileo about the moons of Jupiter, it now seems he mistook Saturn’s rings for moons, and also that, in some cases, he mistook optical illusions for craters on our own Moon. "
ie. Ladyman says that Galileo mistook Saturn’s rings for Saturn’s moons, not Saturn’s rings for Jupiter’s moons!
I can't be bothered to check every claim made in the blogpost, but this is an error that is obvious and easily checked and conveniently seems to make the author's argument seem much stronger than it is so I'm going to treat the whole blogpost with a decent level of scepticism.
You can look at Galileo’s notebooks containing his sketch of Jupiter’s moons above. These sketches clearly show distinct moons orbiting Jupiter, observed over a long period of time. It seems reasonable to conclude from this that he really had discovered moons orbiting a planet other than earth.
Compare these to Galileo’s observations of Saturn from 'Letters on Sunspots':
In other writings Galileo seems confused about his observations of Saturn and seems to understand that what he sees is not the same as what he observed with Jupiter. Presumably this is why, in his ‘Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems’ the argument mostly hinges on Jupiter’s moons (which again, he did actually observe) and doesn’t seem to mention the objects orbiting Saturn at all (maybe I'm wrong here, I just ctrl-F’d for 'Saturn' in this pdf I didn’t read the whole thing). Maybe Galileo was wrong about some other stuff, but his argument here (that he had observed bodies orbiting something other than the earth) seems reasonable to me!
