The paper's insights not only challenge our understanding of the human mind but also offer intriguing implications for the development and understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.

The Hard Problem of Consciousness 

Chalmers' exploration begins with a clear differentiation between the easy and hard problems of consciousness. The easy problems, according to him, involve understanding cognitive functions and abilities, such as information processing, memory, and perception. These are deemed 'easy' not because they are simple but because they are within the realm of explanation by cognitive sciences through computational or neural mechanisms.

In contrast, the hard problem is profoundly different and more elusive. It seeks to explain why and how physical processes in the brain lead to subjective experiences, or qualia - the essence of consciousness. For instance, why does processing visual stimuli translate not just into the recognition of color but also into the experience of 'seeing' that color?

Chalmers' paper, while not directly addressing artificial intelligence or LLMs, provides a framework that is increasingly relevant in this domain. As LLMs like ChatGPT become more advanced, demonstrating abilities to process information, generate coherent responses, and even mimic creative thinking, the question arises: do these models have any form of consciousness or subjective experience?

The Easy Problem of Consciousness (What we are solving and will still be solving for a very long time)

The easy problem of consciousness refers to the set of problems in understanding consciousness that can be directly approached with the tools and methods of cognitive science and neuroscience. It's important to note that "easy" is a relative term here; these problems are not simple, but they are conceptually more straightforward than the "hard problem" of consciousness.

The easy problems involve explaining various cognitive functions and processes, such as:

Discrimination and Categorization: How a cognitive system can differentiate and categorize different types of sensory inputs (like distinguishing between colors, sounds, or tactile sensations).

Integration of Information: How the brain integrates information from various sources into a coherent whole, such as combining visual, auditory, and tactile information to form a complete perception of an object or an event.

Reportability of Mental States: The ability to communicate and report one’s internal mental states, thoughts, and experiences.

Internal Access: The ability of a system to access its own internal states, such as a person being aware of their own thoughts or memories.

Focus of Attention: How an organism can focus its attention on particular tasks or stimuli, selecting some inputs for processing over others.

Control of Behavior: Understanding how conscious decisions and experiences can lead to the initiation and direction of voluntary actions.

Wakefulness and Sleep: The biological and neurological differences between states of wakefulness and sleep, and how these states affect consciousness.

Each of these problems can be addressed by identifying and describing the specific neural or computational mechanisms responsible for these functions. For example, the problem of how we integrate sensory information from different modalities can be approached by studying the neural pathways and brain regions involved in sensory processing and integration.

The main limitation of current LLMs in solving this easy problem of consciousness is that they are sensory-deprived. This presents a fundamental limitation in tasks that require real-world interaction or in situations where we are trying to integrate LLMs into real-world systems like robots. 

Really, what we have solved so far through scaling is the easy-easy-straightforward problem of reaching AGI, or full artificial consciousness. What I'm trying to get to here is that if you're a young researcher and you're thinking that a lot of problems are already solved, they aren't. My expectation, as a young researcher myself, is that solving just these easy problems of consciousness will require dedicating a very significant part of my future career, and yes, I'm dedicated to it.
