This is an announcement and call for applications to the Workshop on Post-AGI Economics, Culture, and Governance taking place in San Diego on Wednesday, December 3, overlapping with the first day of NeurIPS 2025.

This workshop aims to bring together a diverse range of expertise to deepen our collective understanding of how the world might evolve after the development of AGI, and what we can do about it now.

The draft program features:

  • Anton Korinek on the Economics of Transformative AI
  • Alex Tamkin of Anthropic on "The fractal nature of automation vs. augmentation"
  • Anders Sandberg on "Cyborg Leviathans and Human Niche Construction"
  • Beren Millidge of Zyphra on "When does competition lead to recognisable values?"
  • Anna Yelizarova of Windfall Trust on "What would UBI actually entail?"
  • Ivan Vendrov of Midjourney on "Supercooperation as an alternative to Superintelligence"
  • Iason Gabriel of Google Deepmind on Resisting Disempowerment
  • Atoosa Kasirzadeh of CMU on "Taking post-AGI human power seriously"
  • Deger Turan, CEO of Metaculus on "Concrete Mechanisms for Slow Loss of Control"

The event will also have lightly moderated breakout discussions and opportunities for one-on-one conversations.

Workshop Themes

This workshop is an attempt to make sense of how the world might look after the development of AGI, and what we should do about it now. We make two assumptions — that AI will eventually be transformative, and that advanced AI will be controllable or alignable — and then ask: what next?

This workshop will have three main themes:

Post-AGI Economics

What happens when machines can do essentially all economically important tasks? What kinds of mechanisms could redistribute economic power in a way that is politically stable? What will human life look like post-work?

Post-AGI Culture

How will culture develop when AIs are active participants in its creation and distribution? What is the future of AI companions and AI art when they become more compelling than the human alternative? What happens when AIs develop their own parallel culture?

Post-AGI Governance

How will AIs reshape the landscape of global governance? How can we maintain human involvement when the machine alternative is more efficient and higher quality? What kind of government intervention will be necessary to counterbalance the other effects of AI? And what new opportunities will become feasible when powerful AI is widely available?

We'll bring together thinkers from a broad range of domains: machine learning, political science, mechanism design, macroeconomics, history, and more. The core goals of the workshop are to help share insights about the post-AGI world, foster collaboration between disciplines, and nurture the field of post-AGI research.

How to Attend

Our workshop is free but invite-only, please apply here.  It’ll be co-located with NeurIPS, but ours is a separate event, so no need to register for NeurIPS to attend ours!

For a few more details, see the event website.
