Time and Location

This event will take place on the UW campus. We'll most likely be meeting in QNC 1506 or a classroom adjacent to it. Look for "KWRxEA" in large letters on the blackboard/whiteboard to see if you're in the right place.

Discussion will start at 7:30pm. There will be pizza.

Discussion

This week, we'll be reading some of the works of Peter Singer, one of the forefathers of the effective altruism movement, plus some additional EA commentary. Come prepared to discuss:

  • the general contents of the readings assigned
  • how well their arguments match on to the current ideology/ideologies of the effective altruism movement, and if any mismatches are good or bad or a secret third thing
  • for Singer's pieces, if his own takes have evolved in the 35 years between the two essays

Readings

What Should a Billionaire Give - And What Should You? - Peter Singer, 2006
(if you only have time to read one post, read this one)

Famine, Affluence, and Morality - Peter Singer, 1971

A Series of Unprincipled Exceptions - Scott Alexander, 2015
