How do you know an entity is conscious. You cant look into another man's brain,or even that of an animal or insect. But if you kick a dog and it winces in pain--you know its conscious. What if a robot does the same too( even when its software does not have a hard coded pain function or a provision for protest). What if it protests against overwork? would that make it conscious? If not ,what would convice us that it is merely simulating distress and not experiencing it?
