Does anyone remember Eliezer talking about a (thought) experiment where a monkey has to connect two sticks into a larger stick to reach a banana? Or maybe it wasn't Eliezer but someone else rat-adjacent?
I could've sworn I read a passing mention of this (thought) experiment in EY's writing. But for some reason I barely even found any mention of monkeys/apes/chimps, bananas or sticks. LLM didn't help.
The ultimate source is from Wolfgang Köhler, but ofc I didn't learn it there.
One notable experiment involved a chimpanzee named Sultan, who was given two sticks too short to reach a banana outside his cage. Sultan eventually joined the sticks to create a longer tool, demonstrating what Köhler termed "insight" learning—an immediate understanding of relationships to solve a new problem without overt trial and error.
