What’s your advice for young people? Ordinarily I hate that question, and I recall the late, worldly elder statesman of heavy metal, Lemmy Kilmister saying:
"What kind of advice can somebody who’s sixty-three... give to somebody who’s about twenty? The mistakes I made, and the things that caused me problems, don't exist in the world anymore. It’s a completely different world."
It is a very different world. And if I may be grammatically incorrect, it’s getting even more different-ier.
If you’re about twenty what decisions and assumptions about the future can and should you be making? Not everybody is equipped or suited to A.I. research.
But I would like to know what the views are of the Lesswrong community considering how acutely in tune they are with the risks (and opportunities) afforded by the post-transformer AI architecture boom.
Should they just assume that P-doom is likely and the horizon is short? Should they avoid specialization and learn broad skills so that no matter what transitions of the workplace come, they’ll be able to adapt? Should they learn to vibe code - assuming that LLMs will take care of everything.
I guess I'm asking: if you believe the future is uncertain, what is the best strategy?
