Those of you who put happiness as their main thing to be wished for in life: to what degree would you tolerate modifications to your other preferences to achieve happiness? For example would you take a pill (which uses sufficiently advanced technology) that made you extremely happy forever, but erased any preferences you might have for the long-term fate of the rest of humankind? (I wrote, "the rest of" because for you to remain happy forever would seem to entail your personal survival forever.) A pill that made you happy forever, but erased any concern you might currently have for non-human animals? A pill that made you happy forever, but deleted any moral (or otherwise "intrinsic") objection you might currently have to the inflicting of pain or disability by one person on another motivated by the pure pleasure (that some people experience) of inflicting the pain or disability?
ADDED. If there is no important preference or ambition you would give up to be extremely happy forever, then is happiness really the main thing you wish for?
