obviously the cot semantic drift will initially be similar to language. but it will only get less legible from here. and this is already pretty bad? i wouldnโt be surprised if two different people tasked with independently deciphering this would come to very different conclusions.
Iโd note that this same phenomenon happens every time any CoT is released, where people claim they can interpret it (or an LLM interprets it zero shot). Itโd be interesting to have a benchmark for this.
Yeah, I really like that idea.
I actually would bet money that a Sonnet-level model, given previous turn inputs, outputs, and tool calls (but NOT previous turn CoT), and the CoT of this turn could reconstruct
This seems like the sort of thing where objective scoring is possible, too. The literal simplest thing of "the monitor must predict the next tool call based on prior turns + this turn CoT" wouldn't work but I expect there's something adjacent to that in eval space which would.
I might be typical-minding but I would be pretty surprised if two different people tasked with deciphering this excerpt would come to very different conclusions (aside from trivial cases where Alice says "This is FreeCell Solitaire" and Bob says "This is some sort of card game that involves moving cards around" and Carol says "tl; dr").
With this kind of LLM behavior, I often try to ask the question "do humans do this?" and the answer in this case is yes.
Maybe not everyone does and not to this extent, but it's not that uncommon for people to develop their own jargon, including ephemeral task specific jargon that is just relevant to the completion of a single task. It just looks a bit different when we do it, especially if we have to communicate using the jargon with others, where we take vague, normal words and give them temporary special meaning.
Can't tell you how many times I was working on a programming problem and some vague words like "process" or "thing" or "item" came to take on special meaning that was nonobvious to anyone not clued in. What Mythos is doing seems pretty similar, but because it processes tokens/words differently than we do it looks different (what we do would probably look similarly alien to Mythos, except insofar as it's trained to know that we do this).
I'm not sure what the take away from this observation is, but I think it's worth making.
I really do like the "do humans do this" heuristic.
Basically rephrasing what you said: In humans, creating domain-specific or even problem-specific new languages is much easier to create than universal new languages. So the first kind of "new languages" LLMs might make (if they make them) would plausibly end up looking like this.
The question would then be (1) whether these would tend to merge into a universal new language, or (2) would simply split into multiple domain-specific languages, that do not converge, or even (3) whether a good training technique would prevent the rise of DSLs too much, because speciation into multiple languages probably hurts transfer learning or (4) something else entirely.
Related, from Ethan Mollick:
"One thing I mentioned only in passing in my Fable post is that, for long running tasks, Fable starts to develop its own dialect as its many agents and tasks reinforce themselves and make Claudish language ever more Claudish.
You need to ask it to report out in plain English.
This was after a 9 hour task, and it all makes sense, actually, but takes way too much effort to parse, like reading Shakespearian English."

This looks like the result of some kind of conciseness/token efficiency reward during training leading to the model wanting to make its CoT more concise than can be expressed in normal English.
Didn't Anthropic recently increase the number of tokens required to represent a certain amount of text (starting from Opus 4.7)? Maybe reverting this change or something might be a good idea. Or use something like MTP and make the conciseness training step MTP-aware or something so that the extra filler words needed to make the CoT legible are nearly free.
Regardless, I think this result is interesting because it implies that Fable is smart enough to think faster (in some sense) than it can produce legible text, to the point where it actually becomes a benefit for it to compress its thinking scratchpad over whatever illegibility penalties are probably currently placed on its outputs. This implies we'll bottleneck on the token-efficiency of analytical (system 2 style) problem solving soon (first on well-defined tasks and then on less well-defined ones later), unless we're willing to go neuralese or add some kind of system to let LLMs produce more thinking text in a shorter period of time, like MTP or diffusion LLMs.
I got a glitch which resulted in Fable 5 on Max effort responding with "illegible" CoT.

I'm parsing through the SFEN notation carefully, going rank by rank from the top to verify it matches the screenshot, keeping in mind that the ranks are numbered 1-9 from top to bottom and files run from 9 to 1 left to right. Rank f checks out with the piece positions, but I'm noticing something odd about the ๅ ๆ็ placement on file 8 โ let me verify this against the screenshot to make sure I'm reading the board orientation correctly.
Looking at the screenshot more carefully, the columns are labeled 1-9 from left to right across the top, and the rows run from 9 at the top-right down to 1 at the bottom-right, which suggests the board is displayed from ๅพๆ's perspective with a flipped orientation. The SFEN notation places rank ไธ at the top with ๅพๆ้ฆ at the 9็ญ, but when I look at the screenshot's bottom row (labeled 1), I see an upside-down ้พ on the left and upright pieces like ้ฆ, ๆก, ้ on the right โ which doesn't align. I need to reconsider the coordinate mapping: if the board is rotated 180ยฐ from standard orientation, then the screenshot's top-left corner corresponds to (file 1, rank 9) in standard coordinates, which should help me reconcile what I'm seeing with the SFEN data. The pieces in the screenshot confirm this orientation: ๅพๆ's pieces are displayed upright while ๅ ๆ's pieces appear rotated. Checking the SFEN data for rank 9 against what's visible in the screenshot, I can verify the file positions matchโthe rotated pieces on the top row correspond to ๅ ๆ's back rank pieces, and the upright ้ at file 6 is ๅพๆ's piece. All the pieces check outโthe rotated ๅ ๆ pieces and upright ๅพๆ pieces confirm this is from ๅพๆ's perspective. Now I'm verifying rank 2 to make sure the board state is consistent, looking at what should be a ๅ ๆใจ้ at column 5. So the lowercase k in the SFEN represents ๅพๆ็ at 8ไบ, while uppercase K is ๅ ๆ็ at 8ๅ ญ. Looking at the screenshot, I can see the ๅ ๆ็ in the rotated view at rank 6 with ๅ ๆๆญฉ pieces flanking it at files 9 and 7.
Now I'm checking the komadai section on the left side of the screenshot to see what captured pieces are displayed, starting with the ๆญฉ count.
Looking at the SFEN hand notation BGSNL3Pgsn2p, I can decode the pieces: uppercase letters represent ๅ
ๆ's captured pieces (่ง, ้, ้, ๆก, ้ฆ, and three ๆญฉ), while lowercase represents ๅพๆ's pieces (้, ้, ๆก, and two ๆญฉ). In a ๅพๆ-perspective view, ๅพๆ's komadai would appear at the bottom. So ๅพๆ's ้พ is positioned at 8ๅ
ซ, and I need to verify the piece counts match what's shown in the komadai display โ the left side shows six piece types with their respective counts, and the grayed-out ้ฃ confirms ๅ
ๆ has no ้ฃ remaining in hand since it was promoted to ้พ. So move 82 was actually ๅพๆ's last move, and the SFEN move counter confirms we're at the position before ๅ
ๆ's 83rd move. Looking at the right side komadai, I can see ๅพๆ's captured pieces: ้1, ้1, ๆก1, ๆญฉ2, with the ้ฃ and ่ง grayed out (already on the board), which matches perfectly with what the SFEN shows.
Now I'm second-guessing which perspective the board is from โ let me trace through the pieces more carefully. The bottom-right komadai shows upright pieces, which should belong to the player at the bottom of the board. Looking at the bottom rank in the screenshot and comparing it to the SFEN rank a, I need to verify whether the board is flipped or not. It's ๅ ๆ's turn to move. Let me map out the full position: ๅพๆ has their ็ at 8ไบ, a promoted ้พ deep in ๅ ๆ's territory at 8ๅ ซ, a ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ, and ้ pieces at 6ไธ and 6ไนโthat last one also deep in ๅ ๆ's back rank.
The rest of ๅพๆ's pieces include a ้ at 7ไบ, a ๆก at 8ไธ, a ้ฆ at 9ไธ, and pawns scattered across the board at 8ไธ, 7ไธ, 5ไธ, 1ไธ, 9ๅ, and 6ๅ. Their hand has a ้, ้, ๆก, and two pawns.
Now for ๅ ๆ: their ็ is at 8ๅ ญ, they have a promoted ้พ at 1ไธ, a promoted pawn at 5ไบ, and pawns at 9ๅ ญ and 7ๅ ญ.
I'm re-examining rank 7 from the FEN notation. The string 1P1Ps3P breaks down to: empty file 9, a ๅ
ๆ pawn at 8ไธ, empty file 7, a ๅ
ๆ pawn at 6ไธ, a ๅพๆ silver at 5ไธ, three empty files, and a ๅ
ๆ pawn at 1ไธ. But this doesn't match what I'm seeing in the screenshot, so I need to double-check my parsing.
Looking at the screenshot row 7, I can see rotated pawns at columns 1, 6, and 8, plus an upright silver at column 5. That actually does match my parseโthe files line up correctly. And checking rank 6 with PKP6: file 9 has a pawn, file 8 has the king, file 7 has a pawn, which matches the screenshot's columns 9, 8, and 7 showing rotated pieces in that order.
Now I'm going through the ๅ ๆ pawns and their positions. Most of them check outโ9ๅ ญ, 7ๅ ญ, 8ไธ, 6ไธ, 1ไธ all make sense. But then I hit 4ไน, which would be a pawn on the back rank. That's unusual but technically legal if it was dropped there, since a ๅ ๆ pawn can still move forward from rank 9.
Looking at the screenshot more carefully, I need to verify whether that piece at row 9, column 4 is actually a ๆญฉ or something else like a ใจ้. The rotated character looks like an upside-down ๆญฉ, and the SFEN confirms it's a pawn at that position, so 4ไนๆญฉ it is.
Now I'm cataloging all the pieces on the board: the ้ฆ pieces are at 9ไน and 1ไน, the ๆก at 8ไน, the ็ at 8ๅ ญ, the ้พ at 1ไธ, and a ใจ้ at 5ไบ. For ๅ ๆ's hand, I have ่ง, ้, ้, ๆก, ้ฆ, and three ๆญฉ.
Let me verify the material count by tallying all the pawns: ๅพๆ has 6 on the board plus 2 in hand for 8 total, and ๅ ๆ has 6 on the board plus the ใจ้ at 5ไบ making 7, plus 3 in hand for 10 totalโthat's 18 pawns, which checks out.
Now I'm going through each piece type to confirm the counts match standard shogi: the ้ฆ pieces total 4, the ๆก pieces total 4, the ้ pieces total 4, the ้ pieces total 4, and I'm verifying the ่ง count as well.
The position checks out as valid. Now I'm analyzing the actual game state โ it's move 83 with Black to move, and Black's king on 8ๅ ญ is in a precarious position, exposed on the 6th rank with limited protection. I'm starting to trace the attacking possibilities, particularly how White's ้ฆฌ on 4ไบ might be creating threats along the diagonals. So the ้พ at 8ๅ ซ can move vertically up the file toward rank 1, capturing the ๅ ๆๆญฉ at 8ไธ, or move down toward rank 9. Horizontally along rank 8, it has clear movement from 9ๅ ซ down to 1ๅ ซ since that entire rank is empty except for the ้พ itself. The ้พ also has diagonal king-step moves available. Now I need to determine if ๅ ๆ็ at 8ๅ ญ is currently in check from any of these pieces.
Looking at the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ, I'm tracing its diagonal movement patterns in all four directions: northeast toward 1ไธ (reaching 5ๅ ญ, then 6ไธ where it hits a ๅ ๆๆญฉ and can capture), northwest toward 1ๅ ซ (moving through 3ๅ ญ, 2ไธ, 1ๅ ซ), southeast (moving through 5ๅ, 6ไธ, 7ไบ where it encounters a ๅพๆ้), and southwest (moving through 3ๅ, 2ไธ, 1ไบ). The ้ฆฌ also has king-step moves available from its position.
Now I'm checking whether the ๅ ๆ็ at 8ๅ ญ is in check by examining which ๅพๆ pieces can attack it. The ้พ at 8ๅ ซ is blocked by the 8ไธๆญฉ, the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ doesn't reach 8ๅ ญ directly, and the pawns at 8ไธ, 9ๅ, and 6ๅ don't threaten it either. I'm working through the ้ at 5ไธ and its attack pattern, keeping in mind that ๅพๆ's forward direction moves toward rank 9.
Now turning to the ๅพๆ็ at 8ไบ and its defensive structure with the ้7ไบ, ้6ไธ, and other pieces forming what looks like a ็พๆฟ-style or ้็กๅใใใ-type formation. So the ใจ้ on 5ไบ is acting as a gold piece for ๅ ๆ, which means it controls all the squares around it โ 5ไธ directly forward, the diagonals at 4ไธ and 6ไธ, the sides at 4ไบ and 6ไบ, and 5ไธ behind it. That ใจ้ is perfectly positioned to attack the ๅพๆ's gold on 6ไธ and also covers the 6ไบ and 4ไบ squares.
Now I'm checking what defends that ใจ้. The ๅ ๆ's ้พ on 1ไธ can slide horizontally along the first rank through 2ไธ, 3ไธ, 4ไธ, 5ไธ and all the way to 6ไธ where it hits the ๅพๆ's gold โ so the ้พ is also attacking that same gold piece along the rank. So the ้7ไบ defends the 6ไธ้, making it attacked twice but defended once. The candidate move is โฒ6ไธใจ, forcing โณๅ้, then โฒๅ้พ. After that, the ้พ at 6ไธ would attack the ๅพๆ็ at 8ไบ by controlling 7ไบ, creating a strong attacking position.
Wait, I need to recalculate the material exchange here โ after โฒ6ไธใจ captures the ้, then โณๅ้ captures the ใจ้, and finally โฒๅ้พ takes the ้, ๅ ๆ has gained a ้ and ้ for the ใจ้.
Now I'm thinking about what matters more: the material advantage or ๅพๆ's attacking chances. The ๅพๆ้พ on 8ๅ ซ is threatening ๅ ๆ็ at 8ๅ ญ, and I need to check if ๅ ๆ็ has safe escape squares. The 9ไบ square looks blocked by ๅพๆ's 9ๅๆญฉ, so that's not available.
Looking at 8ไบ โ it seems undefended by ๅพๆ's pieces. The ้พ on 8ๅ ซ doesn't control it because the 8ไธๆญฉ blocks the file. This opens up a dangerous possibility: ๅ ๆ็ could potentially escape toward 8ไบ and 8ๅ, which would be moving deep into ๅพๆ's territory and risking ๅ ฅ็ (promotion by king infiltration). That's a critical tactical point to evaluate.
Now examining whether ๅพๆ can mount an effective counterattack โ the ้พ is stuck behind the king on rank 8, while the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ could potentially jump to 6ไธ by capturing the pawn there, which would give check and force the king to move again. This is getting tactically complex. The ๅ ๆๆญฉ at 7ๅ ญ blocks the ้ฆฌ's diagonal, so it doesn't deliver check. Now I'm analyzing the ้ at 5ไธ, which controls 6ๅ ญ, 4ๅ ญ, and the forward squares 4ๅ ซ, 5ๅ ซ, 6ๅ ซ. The ้ at 6ไน is trickierโas a ๅพๆ้, it moves forward (rank+1), sideways to 5ไน and 7ไน, backward to 6ๅ ซ, but the forward diagonals don't exist since rank 9 is the board's edge.
So that ้ essentially just covers 7ไน, 6ๅ ซ, and 5ไน, which restricts the ๅ ๆ็'s escape routes but doesn't directly threaten it at 8ๅ ญ. I'm now checking what ๅพๆ checks are available if it were their turnโspecifically whether dropping a ้ at 8ไบ would give check, since ๅพๆ has ้ in hand.
A ้ at 8ไบ attacks forward to 8ๅ ญ, plus the forward diagonals at 7ๅ ญ and 9ๅ ญ, so yes, โณ8ไบ้ๆ is definitely check. But then if ๅ ๆ just captures with โฒๅ็, that loses the ้ unless ๅพๆ has a strong follow-up, which seems unlikely.
Actually, ๅพๆ could also try โณ8ไบ้ๆ instead โ a ้ at 8ไบ would attack 8ๅ ญ (forward), 7ๅ ญ, 9ๅ ญ (diagonals), and 7ไบ, 9ไบ (sideways), so that's check too. But again, โฒๅ็ and the ้ is just gone; no other piece can recapture on 8ไบ. ๅ ๆ could also potentially block with a pawn, but 9ๅ ญๆญฉ only captures forward to 9ไบ, and 7ๅ ญๆญฉ only takes 7ไบ, so neither helps. So โฒๅ็ or running away are the main options.
Now looking at โณ7ไบ้ๆ or ้ๆ as alternatives... Looking at other candidate moves: a pawn push to 9ไบ doesn't give check since it only attacks 9ๅ ญ. For knight drops, I need to find where a ๅพๆๆก can land to check the king at 8ๅ ญ โ that would be 7ๅ or 9ๅ, since knights from those squares jump to 8ๅ ญ. So โณ7ๅๆกๆ looks like it could work as a checking move.
Now examining what ๅ ๆ can do in response: there's no piece that can capture on 7ๅ, and the king's escape squares from 8ๅ ญ are limited โ 9ไบ is controlled by the 9ๅๆญฉ, and several adjacent squares are blocked by ๅ ๆ's own pieces. The knight at 7ๅ would attack both 8ๅ ญ and 6ๅ ญ. If the king moves to 8ไบ, it's safe from the knight's reach. But 7ไบ is even more interesting โ the king could move there, directly attacking the dropped knight while also threatening deeper infiltration, and checking whether 7ไบ itself is under attack from the ้5ไธ or other pieces.
Now looking at the broader position: ๅพๆ has some checks available but no concrete mating attack yet. The ๅ ๆ็ at 8ๅ ญ is actually quite mobile with escape squares at 8ไบ and access to the upper board โ this is starting to look like an ๅ ฅ็ race. The real question becomes speed: can ๅ ๆ deliver checkmate against the ๅพๆ็ at 8ไบ before ๅ ๆ's own king escapes? ๅ ๆ has enormous material in hand โ ่ง้้ๆก้ฆๆญฉ3 โ plus the ้พ at 1ไธ and the ใจ้ at 5ไบ. Meanwhile ๅพๆ็ is defended by ้7ไบ, ้6ไธ, ๆก8ไธ, ้ฆ9ไธ, and pawns at 9ๅ, 8ไธ, 7ไธ. That advanced 9ๅๆญฉ is notable because it leaves 9ไธ empty.
Looking at candidate moves: โฒ6ไธใจ captures the ้. If ๅพๆ responds โณๅ้, then โฒๅ้พ puts the dragon on 6ไธ with overwhelming attacking force โ ้พ plus all those pieces in hand against a nearly naked ็8ไบ. The question is whether there's a forced mating sequence from there, maybe โฒ7ไธ้พ or some other breakthrough.
Actually, โฒ7ไบ้ๆ looks more forcing โ it's check since the ้พ on 6ไธ supports it diagonally. But after โณ9ไบ็, the king escapes and I need to find the next move, perhaps โฒ8ไบ้ to keep up the pressure. The ใจ้ at 6ไธ can move backward to 6ไบ, sideways to 5ไธ or 7ไธ, but forward is off the board. Crucially, this placement blocks the ้พ's rank-1 attack line, and the ้พ itself actually defends the ใจ้ from that square.
If ๅพๆ responds with โณๅ้, then โฒๅ้พ recaptures, and ๅ ๆ gains material (้้ for a ๆญฉ) while the ้พ advances to 6ไธโa dominant position. Other defensive options for ๅพๆ are worth considering. ks 8ไธ and 7ไบ. The real threat after โฒ6ไธใจ might be โฒ7ไธใจ forking pieces, or maybe โฒ6ไบใจโ7ไบ, but that's slow. What's more dangerous is if ๅพๆ doesn't respond, I can play โฒ7ไธ้ๆ, putting a ้ on 7ไธ that controls key forward-diagonal squares.
Wait, let me check if โฒ7ไธ้ๆ is actually check โ the ้ at 7ไธ attacks backward diagonals including 8ไบ, and it's supported by the ใจ at 6ไธ. So yes, that's ็ๆ. Now what can ๅพๆ do? The ้ at 7ไบ can't capture on 7ไธ since ้ can't move straight backward. The ๆก at 8ไธ can't reach 7ไธ either. So the ็ would have to move.
Actually, let me reconsider the whole position. I have ่ง ้ ้ ๆก ้ฆ and three ๆญฉ in hand, with ๅพๆ็ on 8ไบ. Let me look for something more forcing โ maybe โฒ9ไธ้ฆๆ to attack along the 9-file, though that doesn't seem to give check from that square.
Wait, โฒ7ๅๆกๆ is check since the ๆก from 7ๅ jumps to 8ไบ โ that's the ็! So โณๅๆญฉ is forced if the 7ไธๆญฉ can capture. After that exchange, the 7ไธ square opens up and I need to see what follows.
Let me check โฒ8ไบๆกๆ โ the ๆก at 8ไบ jumps to 7ไธ and 9ไธ, threatening promotions but not immediately checking. That feels slower than the forcing โฒ7ๅๆกๆ line.
Now I'm considering the ้พ โ โฒ2ไบ้พ or โฒ6ไธใจ as candidate moves. But I should also evaluate whether ๅ ๆ is under ่ฉฐใใ threat. If ๅ ๆ plays something slow, what's ๅพๆ's best attacking continuation with the ้พ8ๅ ซ, ้ฆฌ4ไบ, ้5ไธ, and ้6ไน? The ็8ๅ ญ position might be vulnerable to a mating attack, so I need to check if ๅ ๆ can afford a slow move or if forcing play is necessary.
Looking at โณ7ไบ้ๆ โ the ๅพๆ้ at 7ไบ would attack both 6ๅ ญ and 8ๅ ญ diagonally, which is a serious threat to the ๅ ๆ็.
If โฒๅๆญฉ (the 7ๅ ญpawn captures), then 7ๅ ญ is vacated and the king's coverage there is gone. ๅพๆ could follow with โณ6ไธ้ฆฌ, taking the pawn but not giving check. The issue is that ๅพๆ's attacking pieces are poorly coordinated โ the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ is too far away, the ้พ at 8ๅ ซ is blocked by the 8ไธpawn, and the other pieces aren't positioned to deliver a quick mate. Even if ๅพๆ had a few free moves, constructing a forced mating sequence against the ็8ๅ ญ would take multiple moves.
The real threat lies with the ้พ8ๅ ซ โ if ๅพๆ could somehow remove the 8ไธๆญฉ that's blocking it, the ้พ could potentially deliver a devastating attack. But that 8ไธๆญฉ is defended by the ็8ๅ ญ, so it's not an easy target to eliminate.
Let me reconsider whether the ๅ ๆ็ is actually in danger right now. The ๅพๆ position doesn't seem to have an immediate ่ฉฐใใ threat, so maybe I should look at what ๅพๆ can try next โ perhaps something like โณ7ไธๆก to create new threats. So ๅ ๆ's king isn't under immediate threat, but ๅพๆ's king at 8ไบ is vulnerable. I have a strong attacking arsenal in hand โ a bishop, gold, silver, knight, lance, and pawns โ plus the dragon on 1ไธ and the promoted pawn on 5ไบ already bearing down. Let me search for forcing moves that lead to mate or an unstoppable mating attack. ๅพๆ can defend with gold, silver, knight, and a couple pawns, but I should look at checks starting with a knight drop on 7ๅ. The ้ฆ at 9ไน moves down the file toward rank 1, but it's blocked by the ๆญฉ at 9ๅ ญ, so 9ไธ is safe for the ็. Now I'm weighing whether โณ9ไบ็ preserves the pawn structure better than โณๅๆญฉ, or if โฒ7ๅๆก might work as a sacrifice piece later. I'm also considering โฒ7ไธ้ๆ as a checking move that attacks 8ไบ diagonally, though I need to verify what supports it.
Looking at the ้พ at 1ไธ โ its rank-1 ray extends through 2ไธ, 3ไธ, 4ไธ, 5ไธ, then gets blocked by the ๅพๆ้ at 6ไธ, so the ้ at 7ไธ wouldn't actually be supported. That means โณๅ็ or โณๅ้ both just win the ้ for nothing, making this a bad move for ๅ ๆ.
So โฒ7ไธ้ only works after the sequence โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ โ not immediately. โฒ6ไธใจ itself isn't check but sets up the tactic. Now considering โฒ9ไธ้ฆๆ โ it's not check with the ็ at 8ไบ, but it threatens patterns on the 9-file like โฒ9ไธๆ้ฆ, though the concrete follow-up isn't clear yet.
Looking at โฒ9ไธๆกๆ instead โ it attacks 8ไธ and threatens โฒ8ไธๆๆก as check since the promoted ๆก (moving like a ้) at 8ไธ would attack 8ไบ. But this seems too slow, and the ็ at 8ไบ can simply capture the undefended ๆก at 9ไธ, winning material. Moves like โฒ2ไบ้พ and โฒ5ไธ้พ don't accomplish anything meaningful.
The critical tactical sequence is โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ. After this exchange, I need to carefully evaluate the resulting position where ๅ ๆ has a ้พ on 6ไธ with various pawns and pieces, while ๅพๆ's king sits on 8ไบ with supporting pieces including a ้พ on 8ๅ ซ and ้ฆฌ on 4ไบ.
ๅ ๆ's main threat is โฒ7ไบ้ๆ, which gives check to the ๅพๆ king on 8ไบ (the gold on 7ไบ attacks sideways, supported by the ้พ on 6ไธ along the diagonal). If ๅพๆ responds with โณๅ็, that's illegal because the king would be moving into check from the ้พ on 6ไธ. So ๅพๆ must play โณ9ไบ็ instead, after which ๅ ๆ continues with โฒ8ไบ้, further restricting the king's escape squares. Now I'm checking what threats are actually available. The pawn structure is crucial here โ ๅ ๆ already has pawns on files 9, 8, 7, 6, 4, and 1, which means I can only drop pawns on files 5, 3, and 2. That eliminates the standard โฒ9ไธๆญฉ and โฒ8ไธๆญฉ tactics I'd normally consider. So โฒ7ไบ้ followed by โฒ8ไบ้ๆ becomes more interesting as a mating threat, with the silver attacking both 9ไธ and 7ไธ. So โฒ9ไธ้ๆ does give check on the 9ไบ็, but after โณๅ็, ๅ ๆ loses material again since 9ไธ isn't supported. The core problem is that ๅ ๆ's ้พ on 6ไธ gets blocked by the ๆก at 8ไธ along the first rank, and I can't drop pawns on files 8 or 9 due to the ไบๆญฉ rule, so a straightforward mating attack isn't working out.
Let me explore what happens after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ โ maybe โฒ6ไธ้พ creates real threats. From 6ไธ, the ้พ attacks the ๆญฉ on 7ไธ (which is now empty since the ้ moved away) and the ๆญฉ on 5ไธ, plus it controls key diagonal squares like 7ไบ, 5ไบ, 7ๅ, and 5ๅ. That 7ไบ square is particularly interesting since it's now vacant.
Actually, wait โ I think the simpler, stronger continuation is โฒ7ไบ้ๆ. This gives check to the ็ on 8ไบ, and the ็'s escape squares are limited: 9ไบ and 9ไธ are both legal, but 7ไธ is attacked by the ้พ on 6ไธ horizontally, so that's not available.
If Black plays โณ9ไธ็, I can follow up with โฒ8ไบๆกๆ โ the ๆก jumps to both 7ไธ and 9ไธ, delivering check again. Now I need to see if Black can capture the ๆก on 8ไบ with the 9ๅๆญฉ. After โฒ9ไธ้ๆ, the king on 9ไบ is in check from the silver and can't capture it since the silver is supported by the knight on 8ไบ. The king's escape squares are limitedโ9ไธ is blocked by its own lance, 8ไธ by its own knight, and 8ไบ is attacked by the gold on 7ไบ, so that's illegal. The 8ไธ square is occupied by Black's own pawn, so the king has no legal moves. Let me verify the mate: after โฒ9ไธ้ๆ, the ็ on 9ไบ has no escape squares (9ไธ blocked by own ้ฆ, 8ไธ by own ๆก, 8ไบ controlled by the ้ on 7ไบ, 8ไธ by own ๆญฉ, 9ไธ occupied by the attacking ้ supported by the ๆก), can't capture the ้, and can't interpose on an adjacent check โ so it's checkmate.
But I should check if ๅพๆ had a better defense at โฒ8ไบๆก: instead of โณ9ไบ็, what if โณ8ๅ็? Then โฒ7ไบ้ๆ gives check (the ้ attacks 8ๅ diagonally and is supported by the ๆญฉ on 7ๅ ญ), and the ็ can't take it or escape to 9ไธ since that square is also under attack. The critical point is that 8ไบ itself is defendedโthe ๅ ๆ็ sitting at 8ๅ ญ guards it directly, so even if ๅพๆ tries to capture the ๆก, it's protected. The two kings are practically facing each other across the board.
Now if ๅพๆ plays 8ๅ็, I can respond with 7ไบ้, which gets double support from both the 7ๅ ญๆญฉ and the ็8ๅ ญ itself. This move gives check, and looking at the king's escape squares: 9ไธ is covered by the ๆก8ไบ, the 8ไธ and 7ไธ squares are blocked by ๅพๆ's own pawns, 9ๅ is also ๅพๆ's pawn, and 7ๅ is attacked by the ้7ไบ's forward diagonal. The king has nowhere to go. Verifying that the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ and ้พ at 8ๅ ซ can't capture the 7ไบ้ โ the ้ฆฌ's diagonal rays don't reach it, and the ้พ's vertical movement is blocked by the ๅ ๆๆญฉ at 8ไธ. So the mate is confirmed. Now checking the alternative where Black plays 9ไบ็ instead, considering if 8ไบ้ works as an unsupported move or if there's a silver drop check at 9ไธ. โฒ9ไธ้ฆๆ gives check โ the lance attacks along the file to 9ไบ where the king sits. Black's forced to capture with โณๅ็ since there's no way to block an adjacent piece, and nothing else can take the lance. Let me verify if there are other defensive options or if this actually works.
Then โฒ8ไบๆกๆ delivers another check โ the knight from 8ไบ jumps to 9ไธ, checking the king on 9ไบ. If the king moves to 9ไบ, I need to confirm what squares it can actually reach: 9ไธ is blocked by Black's own lance, 8ไธ has Black's own knight, 8ไบ is controlled by my ้ on 7ไบ, 8ไธ has Black's own pawn, and 9ไธ is occupied by my checking knight. That looks like mate โ the king has nowhere to go. After using the ้, ้, and ๆก, I'm checking what pieces remain in hand โ just the ่ง, ้ฆ, and three pawns. With the ็ on 8ๅ, I can't play 7ไบ้ since it's already been captured, and 7ไบ้ฆ doesn't give check. The 8ไบ square is blocked by my ๆก, and moving pawns to 9ไบ or 7ไบ would create illegal double pawns in those files.
Let me reconsider the move order: if I play 9ไธ้ฆ first to force the ็ to respond, then after โณๅ็, I can follow with 8ไบๆก giving check. The ็ would move to 9ไบ, but then I'd have 7ไบ้ available as a strong follow-up since my pieces would be positioned differently by that point. 8ไบๆก leads to mate in both continuations, so I'm verifying whether โฒ7ไบ้ actually forces mate from the position after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ. Checking the first branch again: after โณ9ไธ็โฒ8ไบๆก, if โณ8ๅ็ then โฒ7ไบ้ is mate, and if โณ9ไบ็ then โฒ9ไธ้ is mate with the ๆก8ไบ supporting and ้7ไบ covering 8ไบ.
This means โฒๅ้พ creates an unstoppable mate threat โ more than just ่ฉฐใใ, it's ๅฟ ่ณ unless ๅพๆ can defend or generate perpetual checks against ๅ ๆ็8ๅ ญ. But I need to verify whether โณๅ้ is actually forced after โฒ6ไธใจ in the first place.
Let me step back and check if ๅ ๆ already has a direct mate or ๅฟ ่ณ right now without playing โฒ6ไธใจ, given the current position with ้พ1ไธ blocked by ้6ไธ on rank 1. After the silver moves to 7ไธ, the rook on 1ไธ can capture the gold that takes it, delivering check to the king on 8ไบ since the rook would attack that square from 7ไธ. The rook wouldn't have support though, leaving it vulnerable to recapture. ้พ and ้ for ้ and ้พ โ a losing trade for ๅ ๆ. But maybe there's a mating attack brewing with the ่ง้ๆก้ฆ and the promoted pawn at 5ไบ, targeting the exposed ็ at 7ไธ. The โฒ6ไบใจ move gives check since the promoted pawn attacks 7ไธ diagonally, though I'd be without the ้พ and relying on these pieces. Now I'm checking if ๅพๆ can block with the ้ from 7ไบ.
Let me refocus on the real plan: the โฒ6ไธใจ exchange leading into ้พ6ไธ, which sets up the mating net with 7ไบ and 9ไธ. I need to verify the mate sequence more carefully after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, especially what defensive resources ๅพๆ has and whether they can ignore the exchange entirely. Silver at 9ไธ is still available since I've only used the gold, lance, and knight so far. The king on 9ไบ has no escape: 8ไบ is controlled by the gold at 7ไบ, and 9ไธ/8ไธ are blocked by my own pieces while 8ไธ has my pawn. That's mate. For the direct 9ไธ king response, the knight on 8ไบ supports the silver mate on 9ไธ. Black can't interpose on an adjacent check, and there's no other piece that can capture the gold on 7ไบ.
So after the rook exchange on 6ไธ, I'm threatening mate in seven moves with the gold push to 7ไบ, forcing the king to 9ไบ, then the lance check, the king captures, the knight move, and finally the silver delivers mate. Let me verify once more that after the lance checks on 9ไธ, Black's only legal move is the king capture since it's an adjacent check with no interposition possible. After โฒ6ไธใจ, ๅพๆ must decide whether to capture with โณๅ้, which leads to โฒๅ้พ and forces ๅพๆ to either defend against the โฒ7ไบ้ mate threat or create their own mating attack. I'm checking if ๅพๆ can defend by blocking or guarding 7ไบ, though moves like โณ7ไธๆกๆ seem problematic since they don't actually address the core threat. So โณ7ไธ้ also attacks the ้พ at 6ไธ while defending 7ไบ. When โฒๅ้พ captures it, the ้พ moves to 7ไธ and gives check to the ็ at 8ไบ along the diagonal, but the ็ can respond since it's adjacent to 7ไธ.
After โณๅ็ recaptures, ๅ ๆ loses the ้พ for just a ้, which is a bad trade materially. Let me reconsider: instead of allowing this exchange, maybe โฒ6ไธ้พ is better, retreating the ้พ vertically to 6ไธ where it's safe and keeps pressure.
From 6ไธ, the ้พ controls key squares like 7ไบ and 7ไธ, and now ๅ ๆ has a fresh attacking idea with โฒ7ไบ้ๆ โ but 7ไบ is defended by the ้ on 7ไธ, so after โณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, the ้พ lands on 7ไบ with check. This forces โณๅ็, but then ๅ ๆ has gained tempo and can continue the assault with moves like โฒ7ๅๆก, forcing โณๅๆญฉ as the only response.
Wait, I'm getting tangled in variations. Let me reconsider whether โฒ6ไธใจ is even the sharpest continuation โ what if โฒ7ไบใจ is stronger instead, bringing the ใจ้ from 5ไบ into the attack? After โณๅ้, the ้ moves to 6ไบ and 6ไธ is empty, opening up the rank-1 line. If โฒ6ไธ้พ, it would attack the undefended ้6ไบ vertically and also threaten 7ไธ and 7ไบ diagonally โ but the ้7ไบ can defend 6ไธ via its back-diagonal, so the ้พ itself would be under attack there.
If instead โฒ6ไบใจ, that's a fork hitting both the ้6ไธ and ้7ไบ. If ๅพๆ recaptures with โณๅ้, then โฒ7ๅๆก gives check, forcing โณๅๆญฉ, but the position gets complicated. If ๅพๆ avoids the recapture and retreats the ้ to 5ไบ instead, then โฒ7ไบใจ captures the ้, though the ใจ would be undefended and vulnerable to recapture.
Alternatively, โฒ7ไบใจ directly (taking the ้) works if the ็ is on 8ไบ, which is adjacent and allows โณๅ็ to recapture โ ๅ ๆ trades the ใจ for the ้, a decent material swap but not as forcing as other lines.
So โฒ6ไธใจ remains the stronger continuation. After that move, if ๅพๆ doesn't recapture and instead tries โณ9ไบ็ to sidestep and prepare a counterattack, then โฒ7ไธใจ follows, with the ใจ advancing to 7ไธ where it's supported by the ้พ along the first rank. After โฒ7ไธใจ, I need to check if anything actually defends the 8ไธๆกโthe ้ฆ9ไธ doesn't help since it can't move sideways, but the ็9ไบ does defend it adjacently. So โฒ8ไธใจโณๅ็ leads somewhere, but let me explore โฒ8ไบ้ๆ instead as a check against the 9ไบ็, though it turns out nothing supports that move. When ๅพๆ responds โณๅ้, moving the ้ to 7ไบ, I need to reconsider the position. After โฒ8ไธใจ, the ้พ at 1ไธ supports it along the first rank, making this a powerful infiltration that captures the ๆก and threatens both the ้ฆ and 8ไบ position โ ๅพๆ is essentially crushed.
During the sequence โฒ6ไธใจโณ9ไบ็โฒ7ไธใจ, ๅพๆ got essentially one free move with 9ไบ็, which was only semi-useful. Now I'm weighing the tempos: ๅพๆ's attack against the ็8ๅ ญ needs roughly three to four moves to develop, while ๅ ๆ's grinding approach with โฒ7ไธใจ and โฒ8ไธใจ is slower but opens up a dangerous tactical switch โ specifically โฒ8ไบ้ๆ, which from 8ไบ would attack 9ไธ and 8ไธ while also eyeing the back diagonals, though it doesn't directly threaten the ็9ไบ.
The ็9ไบ position is frustratingly resilient because ้ can't deliver sideways checks and there's no pawn drop available on the 9-file. I'm second-guessing whether โฒ6ไธใจ is actually the best first move โ maybe there's a stronger continuation that forces the mating attack without letting ๅพๆ slip into ็9ไบ so easily. Let me step back and reconsider the whole sequence, particularly whether โฒ7ๅๆก as a checking move might be more forcing, since ๅพๆ's response of โณๅๆญฉ might not be the only option if ็9ไบ is also available. So after โณๅๆญฉ, the ๆญฉ lands on 7ๅ and 7ไธ opens upโI can play โฒ7ไธ้ to attack both 6ไบ and deliver check on 8ไบ where the ็ is. But wait, the ๅพๆๆก on 8ไธ can jump to 7ไธ to capture, so โณๅๆก and I've just lost my ้ with nothing to recapture. That doesn't work. Let me try โฒ6ไธ้ๆ insteadโplacing the ้ there attacks 7ไบ and 6ไบ while also controlling the forward diagonals.
Now checking what defends 6ไธ: the ้7ไบ supports it diagonally, but my ใจ at 5ไบ doesn't reach there. The ๅพๆ้ฆฌ on 4ไบ thoughโit can move along the diagonal to 5ๅ and then 6ไธ, so it directly attacks my new ้. If I play โฒ6ไธ้, Black responds โณๅ้ or โณๅ้ฆฌ, and if they take with the ้, I'm looking at โฒ7ไบ้ as a follow-up, though I need to verify what's supporting that move.
Stepping back to reconsider the whole โฒ6ไธใจ line: even if Black declines with โณ9ไบ็, I've cleanly won the ้ with my ใจ, which is now protected by the ้พ. That's a significant material gainโmy hand would have ่ง้2้ๆก้ฆๆญฉ3โso I should evaluate whether that's strong enough regardless of Black's counterplay. Now I need to check the speed calculation โ whether ๅพๆ can generate enough checks against ็8ๅ ญ to either mate ๅ ๆ or force perpetual check before the mate-in-7 threat lands. Let me work through ๅพๆ's checking options with the pieces and hand available in that position. 8ๅ ญ looks safe since the ้ at 7ๅ doesn't reach it, while 9ไบ is covered by the ๆญฉ at 9ๅ, 7ไบ is attacked by that same ้, and 8ๅ is actually attacked by a ๆญฉ at 8ไธ โ so the ็ should retreat to 8ๅ ญ or possibly 9ๅ ญ after the ้ drops at 7ๅ.
Now I'm seeing that ๅพๆ's last move (pushing with ้ and ้) was actually a losing strategy โ ๅ ๆ captures the ้ and still has the mate threat of โฒ7ไบ้ hanging over the position, so that line doesn't work for ๅพๆ. Looking at the alternative 7ไบ้ๆ, if ๅ ๆ takes with the ๆญฉ, I need to check whether 7ไบ is actually defended โ the ๆญฉ at 6ๅ doesn't help, and the ้ฆฌ at 4ไบ covers a king-step pattern around itself (3ๅ, 4ๅ, 5ๅ, 3ไบ, 5ไบ, 3ๅ ญ, 4ๅ ญ, 5ๅ ญ), which doesn't include 7ไบ. So that's also losing for ๅพๆ. The 7ไบ้ๆ attempt has the same problem โ after โฒๅๆญฉ, the ๅ ๆๆญฉ on 7ไบ is secure and doesn't create any weaknesses, so ๅพๆ is still in trouble. Now I'm checking 7ๅๆกๆ, which gives check...
the ็ can escape to 8ไบ (the ๆก only attacks 6ๅ ญ and 8ๅ ญ, so 8ไบ is safe), or potentially 7ไบ (which would actually threaten the ๆก itself next move), though pushing the ็ forward like that feels risky.
Now I'm checking the king's escape squares more carefully โ after ๅพๆ plays 7ๅๆก, if I move 8ไบ็, then ๅพๆ could push the pawn from 8ไธ to 8ๅ, which would give check since it attacks 8ไบ. If the ็ captures on 8ๅ, I need to verify what pieces actually defend that square โ the ๅพๆๆญฉ7ไธ attacks 7ๅ, not 8ๅ, so I'm trying to figure out what would be covering 8ๅ after the pawn advances there. The ็ at 8ไธ is defended by the ็ at 8ไบ, so I can't capture it. If I retreat with โฒ8ไบ็, I could also consider โฒ7ๅๅ็ to take the ๆก, but that square is attacked by the ๅพๆ pawn at 7ไธ, making it illegal. After โฒ8ไบ็, ๅพๆ has gained tempo by pushing my ็ around and sacrificing the ๆก and pawn, though my ็ at 8ไบ now attacks the ๆก at 7ๅ.
Now I'm analyzing ๅพๆ's remaining threats: they have ้้ๆญฉ2 in hand and could play โฒ8ๅ้ๆ to give check, supported by the ๆญฉ at 8ไธ that they just dropped. Looking at ็'s escape squares from 8ไบ โ 8ๅ ญ is safe, but 7ไบ gets attacked by the ้ at 8ๅ, 9ไบ is covered by the ๆญฉ at 9ๅ, and 7ๅ ญ has ๅพๆ's own ๆญฉ โ so 8ๅ ญ็ is forced. Then ๅพๆ could advance the ้ from 8ๅ to 8ไบ for another check, which is starting to look dangerous, so I need to carefully recount this entire sequence.
Now I'm working through ๅพๆ's full counterattack after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ โ specifically whether โณ7ๅๆก leads to a forced mate or perpetual that would make my capture a losing move. The ๆญฉ at 8ไธ can push to 8ๅ to give check at 8ไบ, and I need to determine whether โฒ8ๅๅ็ is actually the best response or if there are better alternatives like โฒ9ๅ ญ็. Let me recalculate the silver's attack squares from 8ไบ: it controls 8ๅ ญ forward, 7ๅ ญ and 9ๅ ญ on the forward diagonals, and 7ๅ and 9ๅ on the backward diagonalsโso 7ไบ is actually safe from the silver. Checking if 7ไบ is attacked by the pawn on 6ๅ (which only attacks 6ไบ, not 7ไบ) or the horse on 4ไบ (which doesn't reach that far), the king move to 7ไบ appears legal, though it leaves the king in a precarious position.
Now evaluating the alternatives: 7ไธ is attacked by the dragon on 8ๅ ซ along the diagonal, and 9ไธ is also covered by that same dragonโboth moves are illegal. So 7ไบ is the only option, and after that I need to figure out what Black's next move could be, checking whether moves like 7ๅ (where the knight already sits) or 6ไบ pawn advances actually threaten the king on 7ไบ. I'm checking whether the ้ฆฌ can deliver check from 6ๅ โ tracing its possible moves from 4ไบ: it can reach 5ๅ ญ, 6ไธ, 5ๅ, 6ไธ, 7ไบ, 3ๅ ญ, 2ไธ, 1ๅ ซ, 3ๅ, 2ไธ, 1ไบ, plus the king-step squares 4ๅ, 4ๅ ญ, 3ไบ, 5ไบ. None of these directly attack 7ไบ, so that doesn't work either.
Now I'm considering dropping the ้ instead โ placing it at 6ไบ would give check since the ๅพๆ้ at 6ไบ attacks both 5ไบ and 7ไบ, and 6ไบ is empty (the ๆญฉ is at 6ๅ). This looks like a viable move: โณ6ไบ้ๆ. So the ๅพๆๆญฉ on 6ๅ controls 6ไบ, blocking that escape. If the ็ moves to 6ๅ ญ, it's attacked by the ้ on 6ไบ diagonally. Moving to 8ๅ โ let me check what pieces defend there: the ้ on 8ไบ only covers 7ๅ and 9ๅ, not 8ๅ. The ๆก on 7ๅ attacks 6ๅ ญ and 8ๅ ญ, not 8ๅ either. Nothing protects 8ๅ, so the ็ can capture there. So โฒ8ๅๅ็ is forced, placing the king deep in enemy territory next to ็8ไบ. Now I'm checking if โณ8ไธๆญฉๆ works as a check โ the file 8 is clear since the 8ไธๆญฉ was just captured, so dropping a pawn there would indeed attack the king on 8ๅ.
Looking at escape squares: 7ไบ is attacked by the ้6ไบ, 9ไบ is controlled by the ๆญฉ9ๅ, and 8ไบ has a ้ that's now undefended after the ๆญฉ8ๅ was captured. So 9ไธ emerges as the only viable move. The silver on 8ไบ forces the king to capture it, and now I'm tracking what pieces each side has left in hand after this exchange. The second player started with gold, silver, knight, and three pawns, but has spent the knight on 7ๅ, the silver that just got captured, the gold on 6ไบ, and a pawn on 8ไธโleaving just two pawns. I'm checking whether 8ๅ pawn drop would create an illegal double pawn situation since there's already a pawn on 8ไธ. ered โฒ8ๅๅ็ first, then backed into the โฒ8ๅ ญ็ sub-branch. I'm tracking two sub-branches here; in the second one after โณ8ๅๆญฉ โฒ8ๅ ญ็ โณ8ไบ้ โฒ7ไบ็ โณ6ไบ้ โฒ8ๅ็ โณ8ไธๆญฉ โฒ8ไบ็, I need to recount the move sequence carefully โ that's moves 4 through 13, making it ๅพๆ's turn at move 14, and ๅพๆ has run out of checks.
Now I'm checking if the ็ at 8ไบ is in ่ฉฐใใ and what threats ๅพๆ can create. But wait โ I just realized ๅพๆ still has that โฒ7ไบ้mate threat hanging over the entire game that I need to verify is still active. Let me check: the ้พ at 6ไธ is untouched and ๅ ๆ still has pieces in hand, so the threat should still be there.
Looking at ๅพๆ's position more carefully: the ็ is at 8ไบ, with ๆก8ไธ, ้ฆ9ไธ, and pawns at 7ไธ, 8ไธ, 9ๅ. If โฒ7ไบ้ is played, it's check since 7ไบ is empty and supported by the ้พ. After โณ9ไบ็ โฒ9ไธ้ฆ โณๅ็, I was trying to continue the mating attack with โฒ8ไบ... but wait, that's where my own ็ is now! The ็ moved to 8ไบ, so that square is occupied and I can't use it for the ๆก anymore.
But actually, the ็ at 8ไบ controls 9ๅ, which is useful. Let me reconsider what checks are available against ็9ไธ with my remaining pieces: ่ง้2ๆกๆญฉ4 in hand. The ้ฆ was already used at 9ไธ, so I need to find another forcing move. So the ๅพๆ king on 9ไบ isn't actually under attack from the ้ on 8ๅ since that piece controls 7ไธ and 9ไธ diagonally forward, not backward. But if I play โฒ9ไธ้ๆ with my second silver from hand, that's check โ and the ้8ๅ does support it by controlling 9ไธ. The king's escape squares are severely limited: 8ไบ is covered by my ้7ไบ, 9ไธ has the ้ฆ, 8ไธ has the ๆก, and 8ไธ is blocked by the ๅพๆ's own pawn.
This means it's mate โ even in ๅพๆ's most aggressive counterattack, the king just walks into my attack and gets mated anyway. And at move 14, ๅพๆ has no checks remaining and can't defend against โฒ7ไบ้ mate since any pawn drops would be illegal (either creating a doubled pawn on the file or blocked by existing pieces).
The mate threat is โฒ7ไบ้ supported by the ้พ on 6ไธ. To stop it, ๅพๆ would need to either defend 7ไบ or capture the ้, but there's no ้ in hand anymore. Looking at the board pieces that could help: the ้ฆฌ on 4ไบ can actually reach 7ไบ along its diagonal...
So โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ blocks the square entirely and prevents โฒ7ไบ้. But then ๅ ๆ has โฒ7ไบ้พร้ฆฌ, capturing the ้ฆฌ with check since the ้พ on 7ไบ attacks the ็ on 8ไบ. After โณๅ็, ๅ ๆ has ่ง and ้ in hand to continue the attack.
Now looking at the position with ็ on 7ไบ and defenders like ๆก8ไธ, ้ฆ9ไธ, and pawns on 7ไธ/8ไธ/9ๅ/6ๅ/5ไธ โ I'm testing โฒ6ไบ้ๆ as a checking move, but it's unsupported and the ็ can just capture. Then โฒ6ไธ้ๆ looks more interesting, giving check from 6ไธ with back-diagonal coverage of 5ไบ and 7ไบ, though again unsupported. I'm also considering โฒ8ๅๆกๆ but need to evaluate where that leads. Let me recount the material more carefully through that sequence: after ๅ ๆ captures the ้ at 6ไธ with the ใจ, then ๅพๆ recaptures with ้, and ๅ ๆ takes back with the ้พ, I'm tracking what ๅ ๆ has accumulated โ the ้ and ้ from those exchanges, plus the earlier ๆญฉ at 8ๅ and ้ at 8ไบ during the king hunt. So the hand should be ่ง ้2 ้2 ๆก ้ฆ ๆญฉ3, which is a significant material advantage. Actually, I should verify that alternate branch at step (6) where ๅ ๆ takes immediately with โฒๅ็ instead โ checking if โณ8ไธๆญฉๆ works and what happens after โฒ8ไบ็, since there might be other defensive resources I'm missing in that line. So after โฒ8ๅ ญ็, the ้8ๅ doesn't actually attack 8ๅ ญ โ it covers 7ไบ and 9ไบ instead, and the ้พ8ๅ ซ is blocked from defending. Let me trace through what pieces are actually attacking that square.
Now looking at โณ8ไบ้ as the next move, which gives check again by attacking 8ๅ ญ, but the silver on 8ไบ turns out to be unsupported since the ๆญฉ left 8ๅ and the ๆญฉ8ไธ can't reach back to defend it. After โฒๅ็ captures the silver, ๅพๆ has ้ and ๆญฉ in hand and needs to find another check โ โณ8ๅ้ looks promising since it would give check and be supported by the ๆญฉ8ไธ, but then โฒ8ๅ ญ็ escapes again. So 8ๅ ญ็ is forced, and then ๅพๆ plays 8ไบ้ โ but that just loses the piece to ๅ็, so that's not viable. Looking at other checks from that position, 7ไบ้ is possible since the ้ can move forward-diagonally from 8ๅ to 7ไบ, which would give check to the 8ๅ ญ็. The ๆก on 7ๅ doesn't support it though, so I need to reconsider what's actually defending that move. Actually, โฒ7ๅ ญๆญฉร7ไบ is even more direct โ the pawn just captures the gold. So after โฒ8ๅ ญ็, Black's only try is โณ7ไบ้โฒๅๆญฉ, losing the piece. Let me recount Black's hand through this line: starting with ้้ๆญฉ2, then after the knight move to 7ๅ I have ้้ๆญฉ2, the 8ๅ pawn push, the 8ไธ pawn drop leaves ้้ๆญฉ1, then the 8ๅ silver move down to ้ๆญฉ1, and finally the 8ไบ silver advance.
After โฒๅ็ capturing the silver, Black plays โณ8ๅ้ with just a pawn in hand. White's king escapes to 8ๅ ญ, and Black has run out of checks โ the 8ไธ pawn drop is illegal due to the pawn already on 8ไธ. White's hand is loaded with pieces (่ง้2้3ๆก้ฆๆญฉ4), and the โฒ7ไบ้mate threat still dominates. Black's only try is โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ to block, but White just recaptures and wins decisively. So the conclusion is clear: after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, Black's counterattack fails completely; White's king safely escapes via 8ไบ and 8ๅ ญ.
Wait โ I'm reconsidering whether โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ could work as an early defense right after โฒๅ้พ. The horse can jump from 4ไบ to 7ไบ via the 5ๅ-6ไธ diagonal, and both those squares are empty, so the move is geometrically possible. Once on 7ไบ, the horse blocks the mating square and attacks the dragon on 6ไธ (since a horse on 7ไบ can reach 6ไธ diagonally). But if White plays โฒ6ไบ้พ to stay close and attack the horse, Black's โณๅ้ฆฌ recapture leaves nothing to recapture for White โ so that line loses material for White immediately.
Now I'm checking whether โฒ6ไบ้พ gives check instead. The dragon on 6ไบ would need to attack the king on 8ไบ, but the horse on 7ไบ blocks that diagonal, so it's not check and the move is bad. Let me look at โฒ6ไธ้พ instead โ moving the dragon vertically up the 6-file to 6ไธ, which would attack the horse on 7ไบ diagonally while keeping the dragon defended by the king.
But wait, the horse on 7ไบ can also attack 6ไธ diagonally, so after โฒ6ไธ้พโณๅ้ฆฌ, I'd lose the dragon anyway. That doesn't work either. So I need to consider retreating moves like โฒ5ไธ้พ, โฒ4ไธ้พ, or โฒ2ไธ้พ along the first rank instead.
Looking at the material count now: I have a bishop, two golds, two silvers, a knight, a lance, and three pawns in handโthat's a significant advantage. Black's horse on 7ไบ is now purely defensive, no longer attacking my king. With that material advantage, I can attack at my own pace, whether that's playing โฒ2ไธ้พ to consolidate, or even something aggressive like โฒ8ไบๆกๆ to threaten multiple squares.
But waitโwhat if I just capture the horse directly with โฒๅ้พ? That gives check since the rook on 7ไบ would attack the king on 8ไบ, and it's supported... actually, no, I need to verify the support. After โณๅ็, the position shifts again, but this recapture might be stronger than I initially thought. I'm exploring whether 8ไธ้พ works as a move, then reconsidering after ๅ็. The key issue is that after trading the ้พ for the ้ฆฌ on 7ไบ, I'd be left attacking with just hand piecesโtwo ่ง, two ้, two ้, one ๆก, and pawnsโwhich is substantial but lacks board-based attackers except for the ใจ.
Looking at 6ไธ่งๆ as a checking move, it doesn't seem to deliver mate since the ็ has escape squares. The trade itself might actually weaken the attack despite the material advantage, so instead I should keep the ้พ active by retreating to 2ไธ or 5ไธ, preserving both the ้พ and the hand ่ง้ for a stronger continuation.
Now I'm weighing different ้พ placements โ 4ไธ or 6ไบ don't work well, but 2ไธ keeps the pressure alive with threats like 6ไธ or 7ไธ้ๆ. Though when I calculate 7ไธ้ against ็8ไบ with ้ฆฌ7ไบ, the ้ฆฌ can simply capture on 7ไธ, so that line falls apart. Maybe 8ไบๆกๆ as a quiet move threatening 7ไธๆกๆ is worth considering instead.
Let me also reconsider ๅพๆ's counterattack option after โฒ6ไธใจ โ I keep forgetting that 6ไธใจ is already a capture of the ้ that was sitting there, so ๅพๆ can't ignore it and immediately launch checks with the ๆก. Even if ๅพๆ tries โณ7ๅๆก anyway, ๅ ๆ is already up material (the captured ้) and the ใจ on 6ไธ is defended by the ้พ. When ๅพๆ's checks eventually run out after ๅ ๆ's ็ escapes around the 8ไบ/8ๅ ญ area, ๅ ๆ will have a decisive advantage and can consolidate the win.
For the (B3) line where ๅพๆ plays โณ6ไธๅ้โฒๅ้พโณ7ไธ้ๆ, I need to verify whether โฒ6ไธ้พ is actually safe โ the ้ฆฌ on 4ไบ might be able to reach 6ไธ, which would leave the ้พ hanging with no recapture available.
Looking at the escape squares along the first rank, โฒ5ไธ้พ, โฒ4ไธ้พ, โฒ3ไธ้พ, and โฒ2ไธ้พ all seem relatively safe from immediate attack, so that's where the ้พ would retreat if the center squares get too dangerous.
Now I'm analyzing what happens after โฒ2ไธ้พ โ ๅ ๆ has a strong material advantage with ้้ in hand plus the infiltrating ้พ on rank 1, and ็8ไบ is still exposed. The key tactical idea is โฒ7ๅๆกๆ, which gives check since the knight from 7ๅ covers both 6ไบ and 8ไบ. This forces ๅพๆ to respond to the check, likely with โณ7ไธๆญฉร7ๅ, but then ๅ ๆ has follow-up threats to exploit the weakened position. I'm verifying the board position to confirm the dragon on 1ไธ can indeed support the 6ไธ squareโchecking that all intermediate squares along rank 1 are empty, which they are. The ใจ้'s move from 5ไบ to 6ไธ is a legal diagonal advance for ๅ ๆ, moving one file forward and one rank back as expected.
Now I'm checking whether the ใจ้ itself is under attackโthe ๅพๆ gold on 6ไธ can reach 5ไบ diagonally, so they're attacking each other. But since it's ๅ ๆ's turn, the ใจ strikes first and wins the exchange because the dragon backs it up. This mutual attack is precisely why โฒ6ไธใจ is the strongest moveโit forces a favorable capture.
I should also consider alternatives like โฒ4ไธใจ (which just sidesteps pointlessly) or defending the ใจ, but taking is clearly best. There's another option worth exploring: playing โฒ7ๅๆกๆ first to give check and disrupt ๅพๆ's pawn structure, then following with โฒ6ไธใจ. This would deflect the 7ไธ pawn to 7ๅ and open up 7ไธ for future silver or gold drops, but the downside is that a pawn on 7ๅ would attack 7ไบ and actually weaken ๅ ๆ's king escape square while supporting ๅพๆ's potential moves on the 6ไบ and 8ไบ lines.
The cleanest approach is just โฒ6ไธใจ directly, keeping the knight in reserve for the 8ไบ mating net. Now I need to figure out ๅพๆ's best response โ the main candidates are โณๅ้ or possibly โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ versus โณ7ไธ้ๆ after the sequence โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ.
If ๅพๆ plays โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ to keep the hand-้, that recalls the horse and removes the attack, but then โฒ8ไบๆกๆ creates serious threats: โฒ7ไธๆกๆ captures the pawn on 7ไธ (defended by the ๆก8ไธ), and thisๆๆก on 7ไธ would attack both the ้ฆฌ7ไบ and the ็8ไบ โ so ๅพๆ has to be very careful about โฒ7ไธๆกๆ followed by โณๅๆก.
Either way, โฒ6ไธใจ is a grinding win for ๅ ๆ: if ๅพๆ declines the ้, ๅ ๆ just wins it cleanly; if ๅพๆ accepts, ๅ ๆ gets ้+้ with a raging attack and no viable counterplay from ๅพๆ (I've verified the checking lines all fail). The position is decisively winning for ๅ ๆ.
Now let me double-check the material count before โฒ6ไธใจ to make sure my evaluation is sound. So ๅพๆ is actually up significantly in material with those extra gold and silver pieces, but they're terribly placed โ the gold on 6ไน is completely useless, and the silver on 5ไธ is floating without contributing to defense. Meanwhile, ๅ ๆ is down material but has a safer king position at 8ๅ ญ, a powerful battery with the ใจ and ้พ attacking 6ไธ, and plenty of pieces in hand for a mating attack.
Looking at move 82 where ๅพๆ played ้พ8ๅ ซ, it seems like a slow move that doesn't accomplish much โ maybe ๅพๆ intended ้พ7ไธ instead, which would be more forcing, but even that gets complicated after ๅ ๆ responds.
The key calculation is that ๅ ๆ's โฒ6ไธใจ leads to mate in roughly 3 moves of ๅ ๆ's tempo, while ๅพๆ needs at least 4+ non-forcing moves to mount any counterattack. ๅ ๆ wins the race decisively.
Now I'm checking if there's something even faster than โฒ6ไธใจ โ like an immediate mating attack. Looking at check candidates like โฒ7ๅๆก or โฒ7ไธ้, but these don't seem to lead anywhere faster. Looking at the alternatives after โฒ7ไธ้พ: if Black plays โณๅ็ (king captures), I need to evaluate the material exchange โ White sacrificed a silver and dragon to gain a gold, which is a terrible trade unless there's a mating attack with the remaining pieces (่ง้2ๆก้ฆๆญฉ3 in hand).
Now examining the forcing line with โฒ6ไธ้ๆ โ this move gives check and is supported by the ใจ5ไบ pawn, but Black's king has limited escape squares: 8ไบ might be available, 7ไบ is blocked by Black's own silver, 8ไธ has Black's own knight, and 6ไบ is controlled by the gold on 6ไธ. If Black plays 8ไบ, then โฒ7ไบ้looks tempting as a follow-up check, but the ใจ5ไบ pawn doesn't actually support it (it only attacks 6ไบ), so this line collapses. After testing various forcing continuations, none lead to immediate mate โ Black survives the checks. So the quiet move โฒ6ไธใจ, capturing and creating serious mating threats, appears to be the strongest continuation, and I'm now checking whether this move itself constitutes a ่ฉฐใใ.
The key threat after โฒ6ไธใจ would be โฒ7ไธใจ, where the dragon on the first rank supports the ใจ once it moves, allowing it to fork both the ๆก8ไธ and the ้7ไบ โ though I need to verify whether both pieces are actually defended. ported by the ้พ now?? โ let me check: after โฒๅ็, the ้พ is still on 8ๅ ซ, so 8ไบ isn't defended anymore. Then โฒๅ็ gives me +้ with a huge material advantage. If ๅพๆ tries โณ7ๅ้ๆ for a check along the diagonals, โฒ8ๅ ญ็ escapes safely since the ้พ blocks the back rank โ and I'm verifying whether ๅพๆ's silver can even reach 8ไบ from 7ๅ in the first place.
Now I'm also considering what happens if ๅพๆ responds to โฒ6ไธใจ with โณ6ไธ้ฆฌ instead, attacking the ๆญฉ and activating the horse to threaten multiple squares like 8ไน and 7ๅ ญ โ but those follow-ups look slow or blocked, so the position still favors me. The ใจ on 7ไธ moving to 8ไธ captures the knight while staying supported by the dragon along the first rank, and since ๅพๆ's silver on 7ไบ can only retreat to 6ไธ or 6ไธ (blocked elsewhere), White's forcing sequence wins material either way.
Now I'm seeing the decisive continuation: โฒ6ไธใจ is the key move. If Black recaptures with the silver, then โฒๅ้พ threatens an unstoppable โฒ7ไบ้ leading to forced mateโeither โฒ9ไธ้ฆๆ followed by โฒ8ไบๆกๆ and โฒ7ไบ้#, or if Black tries โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ to block the attack, White has strong continuations like โฒ2ไธ้พ.
If Black declines and plays โณ9ไบ็ instead, White pushes โฒ7ไธใจ supported by the dragon, infiltrating and winning material. Black's counterattacking tries with moves like โณ7ๅๆก don't generate enough checks to save the position. ๅพๆ could try 9ไบๆญฉ to attack 9ๅ ญ, but that's not check and doesn't accomplish much; or 8ๅ้ๆ which gives check and is supported by the 8ไธๆญฉ, forcing 8ๅ ญ็ โ but then 7ไบ is attacked by the ้8ๅ's diagonal, and 9ไบ is also covered, leaving only 8ๅ ญ as a safe flight. The silver on 7ไบ gives check along the diagonals, but it's unsupported โ if I capture with the pawn from 7ๅ ญ, Black just loses material. Then looking at the alternative with the gold drop on 8ๅ, it forces my king to 8ๅ ญ, and when Black pushes the gold forward to 8ไบ, I can capture it since the pawn on 8ไธ doesn't actually defend that square.
Now I'm checking Black's last counterattack possibility on the edge file โ after my promotion on 6ไธ, if Black plays 9ไบ pawn, I can capture it, but that opens the 9ๅ ญ square. The key issue is whether Black can then drop another pawn on 9ๅ ญ to create threats, but with my king on 8ๅ ญ, that's not giving check, just threatening 9ไธ. The pawn on 9ๅ ญ doesn't give check, but it does open up the side โ though the lance on 9ไธ is blocked anyway, so that's not an immediate threat. The real issue is that Black's side attack is too slow compared to White's โฒ7ไธใจ push. Now I need to verify whether โฒ7ไบ้ actually delivers mate in 7 even when Black tries to interpose with adjacent pieces like the gold on 7ไบ, lance on 9ไธ, or silver on 9ไธ and 7ไบ โ the lance check from 9ไธ would be attacking the king on 9ไบ, but that's still within the adjacent range.
No interposition is possible against the knight on 8ไบ either, and all the checking pieces are either adjacent or knights. For the move โฒ9ไธ้ฆ, that's a lance drop on file 9 โ White already has a lance on 9ไน, but the two-pawn rule only applies to pawns, so that's legal. The silver on 7ไบ is also a valid drop on an empty square. Let me reconsider whether โฒ6ไธ้พ might be stronger โ the horse on 7ไบ would attack it diagonally, so that doesn't work. What about โฒ5ไธ้พ instead, eyeing 5ไธ? The 6ๅ้พ move looks solid โ it's not attacked by the ้ฆฌ7ไบ or other pieces, and it gains material while keeping the dragon active on that square, controlling key squares along the rank and diagonal.
Now I'm checking the secondary candidates to rule out. The 7ไธใจ idea doesn't work since the ใจ can't reach there anyway. The 7ๅๆกๆ is premature โ after โณๅๆญฉ White hasn't gained much, and Black has defensive options like โณ9ไบ็. Defending with something like 7ๅ ซ้ๆ also fails because the dragon on 8ๅ ซ would just attack it, and there's no piece to support it. The king is already safe, so defensive moves just waste the winning tempo. I'm considering โฒ8ไบๆกๆ as an aggressive setup with threats of promoting on 7ไธ or 9ไธ, though 9ไธ looks undefendedโbut promoting there seems slow compared to just capturing the gold. Then there's โฒ6ไบใจ as a fork, but if ๅพๆ responds with โณๅ้, it opens up rank-1 for โฒ6ไธ้ๆ.
I'm settling on โฒ6ไธใจ as the best move, with the main line showing the mating sequence and defensive alternatives for ๅพๆ like โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ or โณ7ไธ้. The key is the speed calculation that refutes ๅพๆ's counterattack, plus the warning that 7ไธ and 9ไธ are mined. For the position assessment, ๅพๆ is materially ahead with the gold and silver count.
After โฒ6ไธใจ, ๅ ๆ shifts to a winning position despite the material deficit. The ๅ ๆ็'s upper escape potential and ๅ ฅ็ possibilities provide insurance, while ๅพๆ's piecesโespecially the ้6ไนโare poorly coordinated and not contributing. The last move โณ8ๅ ซ้พ was a losing tempo that failed to generate real threats.
I'm thinking about whether to include a diagram of the critical position after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, which would show the โฒ7ไบ้ threat that seals the gameโthat single diagram would illustrate the mating pattern more clearly than text alone. A diagram of the critical position would help them follow the mate sequence, so I'll include one. For notation, the user provided SFEN and English text, and their memory mentions Western notation preference, but the skill defaults to Japanese numeric form โ I'll go with that as the primary style.
Now checking if there's a stronger continuation after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พโณ7ไบ้ฆฌ โ something like โฒ6ไบ้พ instead of retreating, but that doesn't work. Exploring alternatives like โฒ4ไธ้พ, โฒ2ไธ้พ, or โฒ5ไธ้พ, though I need to verify which pieces are actually still on the board since the ใจ was captured in that exchange and I want to make sure I'm not accidentally using it in the mate sequences. Now I'm verifying the mate line after โฒ7ไบ้ more carefully, particularly the โณ9ไธ็ branch โ checking whether โฒ8ไบๆก leads to mate after โณ9ไบ็ and โฒ9ไธ้ๆ, and also examining โณ8ๅ็ which gets mated by โฒ7ไบ้. I'm working through the king's remaining flight squares from 9ไธ when attacked by the knight on 8ไบ.
I'm also confirming that in the mate position with โฒ7ไบ้, the ๅพๆ็ on 8ๅ cannot capture the knight on 8ไบ because that would place the king adjacent to the ๅ ๆ็ on 8ๅ ญ, which is illegal โ kings can never be adjacent regardless of other defenses. Finally, I'm verifying the initial mate line holds: โฒ7ไบ้ โณ9ไธ็ โฒ8ไบๆก โณ8ๅ็ โฒ7ไบ้, where the silver on 7ไบ is supported by the pawn on 7ๅ ญ. So โณ6ๅ ญ้ doesn't actually threaten 8ๅ ญ directly โ but what about promoting it to 7ไธ? A promoted silver at 7ไธ moves like a gold: forward to 7ๅ ซ, diagonals to 6ๅ ซ and 8ๅ ซ, sideways to 6ไธ and 8ไธ, backward to 7ๅ ญ. That still doesn't reach 8ๅ ญ, so it's not a check either.
Now looking at โณ6ๅ ญ้ itself โ the pawn at 6ไธ can capture forward to 6ๅ ญ, so โฒๅๆญฉ just wins the silver. And โณ7ไธๆกๆ doesn't give check either since it only attacks 8ไน and 6ไน. So I've confirmed all of ๅพๆ's checking attempts โ the 8ไบ and 7ไบ pieces, plus the 7ๅ knight โ are all refuted.
But there's still one loose end: after โฒ6ไธใจ, what if ๅพๆ plays โณ5ไธ้ๆ to attack the ใจ directly?

Hmm โ one risk: presenting the post-exchange diagram might confuse (differs from given position). I'll clearly label it. Title: position_after_61ryu or such.
Also the mention in the skill: "Read the Visualizer's diagram read_me module before rendering" โ yes, must call visualize:read_me(["diagram"]) silently first.
Let me draft the SVG mentally per spec:
#CC0000.Square centers: cx(col i, 0-indexed from left=file9) = 50 + 62.22i + 31.1; cy(row j) = 80 + 62.22j + 31.1.
Let me compute: square size s = 560/9 = 62.222. cols (file): file = 9 - i. file9โi0: cx=50+31.1=81.1; file8โi1: 143.3; file7โi2: 205.6; file6โi3: 267.8; file5โi4: 330.0; file4โi5: 392.2; file3โi6: 454.4; file2โi7: 516.7; file1โi8: 578.9. rows (rank): rank r โ j=r-1: cy = 80 + 62.22*(r-1) + 31.1: r1: 111.1; r2: 173.3; r3: 235.6; r4: 297.8; r5: 360.0; r6: 422.2; r7: 484.4; r8: 546.7; r9: 608.9.
Pieces to place (after โฒๅ้พ): Gote (rotated): 9ไธ้ฆ(81.1,111.1), 8ไธๆก(143.3,111.1), 8ไบ็(143.3,173.3), 8ไธๆญฉ(143.3,235.6), 7ไธๆญฉ(205.6,235.6), 5ไธๆญฉ(330.0,235.6), 1ไธๆญฉ(578.9,235.6), 9ๅๆญฉ(81.1,297.8), 6ๅๆญฉ(267.8,297.8), 4ไบ้ฆฌRED(392.2,360.0), 5ไธ้(330.0,484.4), 8ๅ ซ้พRED(143.3,546.7), 6ไน้(267.8,608.9). Sente (upright): 6ไธ้พRED(267.8,111.1) [highlight square], 9ๅ ญๆญฉ(81.1,422.2), 8ๅ ญ็(143.3,422.2) โ use ็ for sente?? convention: ๅ ๆ=็?? the rendering spec says ๅ ๆ's king ็, gote ็ (though varies; default ็ both if unsure) โ the SCREENSHOT shows both as ็... I'll use ็ for gote and ็ for sente โ hmm spec: "Convention: ๅ ๆ's king is ็ (ล), ๅพๆ's king is ็ (gyoku)" โ eh, traditionally it's reversed (็ for the lower-ranked... whatever) โ follow the spec as written: sente ็?? โ hmm, actually traditional: ็ๅฐ held by senior player; in diagrams usually ๅ ๆ=็?? โ Kifu diagrams typically show ๅพๆ with ็ or both ็... I'll just follow the reference doc: ๅ ๆ ็, ๅพๆ ็. Fine.
Highlight: 6ไธ square: x = 50+62.22*3 = 236.67, y=80, w/h=62.22 โ pale yellow #F5E6A8-ish.
Star points at grid intersections: (after 3 cols & rows from each edge): x=50+186.67=236.67 and 50+373.33=423.33; y=80+186.67=266.67 and 80+373.33=453.33.
Plus a "โฒ6ไธๅ้พใพใง" caption maybe at bottom.
Also need "diagram" read_me โ it'll give CSS var guidance; the board colors are shogi-specific per the reference (#DEB887 etc.) โ fine, reference doc explicitly authorizes those. I'll still call read_me as mandated and adapt (e.g., use var(--text-primary) for labels where sensible with fallbacks).
One more consideration: response language. User wrote English โ respond English with Japanese terms (romaji on first use). Use โฒ/โณ markers.
Also per the skill's competitive framing: commit to the assessment: ๅ ๆๅๅข (sente is winning decisively) โ actually before โฒ6ไธใจ it's "ๅ ๆๅๅข" contingent on finding it; I'll phrase: despite the material deficit, sente is winning (ๅ ๆๅๅข) โ the move that proves it is โฒ6ไธใจ.
Length/formatting: This deserves a thorough but not bloated response. A few section headers, mostly prose + notation lines. Variation lines can be set as short indented/notation blocks. Avoid excessive bullets. Include the diagram after introducing the main line.
Let me write out the key variations cleanly:
ไธป่ฆๅคๅ (main line): โฒ6ไธใจ โณๅ้ โฒๅ้พ โ threatening โฒ7ไบ้: โฒ7ไบ้ โณ9ไบ็ โฒ9ไธ้ฆ โณๅ็ โฒ8ไบๆก โณ8ๅ็ โฒ7ไบ้ใพใง (่ฉฐใฟ)
Also mention candidate alternatives & why inferior: โฒ7ๅๆก (premature: โณๅๆญฉ and โฒ7ไธ้ fails to โณๅๆก), defensive moves unnecessary (็ is safe; ้พ8ๅ ซ's attack is blunted by 8ไธๆญฉ; checks all lose material), โฒ6ไบใจ inferior version of the idea.
And the evaluation summary: material count gote +้้ร2 vs ้ฆ2ๆญฉ2... let me state: gote is ahead the equivalent of two ้ and two ้ against two ้ฆ and two ๆญฉ โ wait let me recount to be safe: ้: sente total = 1 (hand). gote = 6ไธ+6ไน+hand1 = 3. diff โ2. ้: sente 1 hand. gote 7ไบ+5ไธ+hand1 = 3. diff โ2. ้ฆ: sente 9ไน+1ไน+hand = 3. gote 9ไธ = 1. diff +2. ๆก: sente 8ไน+hand=2; gote 8ไธ+hand=2. even. ๆญฉ: sente 6 board +ใจ +3 hand = 10; gote 6+2 = 8. +2. ่ง้ฃ: even (้ฆฌvs่งhand; ้พvs้พ). โ so: gote up 2้2้ for 2้ฆ2ๆญฉ โ roughly a ้+้ net advantage in raw terms. But efficiency: ้6ไน dead, ้5ไธ stranded, ้พ8ๅ ซ hitting a wall; sente's pieces ALL working.
I might briefly note the last move โณ8ๅ ซ้พ appears to have been the decisive tempo-loss (it threatens 8ไนๆก at most).
Also the skill says lead with the best move recommendation in the ๆๅๆ section: "โฒ6ไธใจ is the move" โ I'll commit hard.
One more sanity check on โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ โ hmm, what if ๅพๆ interposes the order: โฒ6ไธใจ โณ7ๅๆก!? (check FIRST, before deciding on 6ไธ): โฒ8ไบ็ (as before โ and NOTE: now ใจ sits on 6ไธ attacked by ้7ไบ!! โ wait: ้7ไบ: back-diags 6ไธ โโ attacks ใจ โ but ใจ defended by ้พ โ โ if later โณๅ้โฒๅ้พ same thing โ) โณ8ๅๆญฉ โฒๅ็ (etc. โ same refutation; sente even happier with ็ marching) โ or at any pause โฒsame continues. โ consistent.
And ultra-edge-case: after โฒ6ไธใจ, โณๅ็?!?! โ ็8ไบร6ไธ?? NOT ADJACENT โ impossible lol โ.
I think I'm ready. Response plan:
For the diagram: call read_me silently first with ["diagram"], platform unknown.
Loading messages for the widget: shogi is a game โ playful is OK? It's not a "serious" topic. Keep them light but not silly: e.g., "Setting up the board", "Placing the dragon on 61", "Arranging the mating net". ~5 words each, 2-3 messages.
Let me now write the SVG carefully. I'll generate it programmatically in my head with the computed coordinates. Use font-family serif for kanji. Gote rotation: transform="rotate(180 cx cy)".
Pieces list with coords (rounded to 1 decimal):
Highlight rect 6ไธ: x=236.7, y=80, 62.2ร62.2, fill #F0E0A0 (pale).
Board lines: vertical at x = 50 + 62.22k for k=1..8: 112.2, 174.4, 236.7, 298.9, 361.1, 423.3, 485.6, 547.8. Horizontal y = 80+62.22k: 142.2, 204.4, 266.7, 328.9, 391.1, 453.3, 515.6, 577.8.
Column headers (9..1 leftโright) at cx values, y=72: 9@81.1, 8@143.3, 7@205.6, 6@267.8, 5@330.0, 4@392.2, 3@454.4, 2@516.7, 1@578.9. Row labels at x=628, cy values: ไธ@111.1 ... ไน@608.9.
Gote komadai: yโ40 area: text "โ ๅพๆใ้ ้ ๆก ๆญฉไธ" โ right aligned near x=610, anchor end. Sente komadai: yโ680: "โ ๅ ๆใ่ง ้ไบ ้ไบ ๆก ้ฆ ๆญฉไธ" left at x=50. Caption: "โฒ6ไธๅ้พใพใง๏ผๅคๅๅณ๏ผ" maybe at yโ720. Hmm โ could also add small text "ๅพๆ็ช" (gote to move). Let me add: y=712: "ๅณใฏโฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พใพใงใปๅพๆ็ช".
Actually for cleanliness: gote komadai top-right: "โๅพๆ๏ผ้ ้ ๆก ๆญฉไธ"; sente bottom-left: "โๅ ๆ๏ผ่ง ้ไบ ้ไบ ๆก ้ฆ ๆญฉไธ".
Pieces (sente upright, gote rotated, promoted red):
Wait โ should the diagram be the CURRENT position instead? Hmm. The user gave a screenshot of the current position โ rendering the variation position (after โฒๅ้พ) adds NEW information. That's the better choice. โ. I'll label it clearly.
Now writing prose. Keep romaji on first use: ็ต็ค (shลซban), ๅ ๆ (sente), ๅพๆ (gote), ใจ้ (tokin), ้พ (ryลซ), ้ฆฌ (uma), ่ฉฐใใ... etc. Don't overdo.
A note on length: this is a rich analysis; aim for thorough but tight. Use a couple of headers (## ๅฝขๅขๅคๆญ, ## ๆๅๆ๏ผโฒ6ไธใจ, ## ๅพๆใฎๅใใจๅๆ, ## ใใฎไปใฎๅ่ฃๆ) โ or English headers with Japanese terms. Given user reads Japanese fluently, mixed is fine. Keep prose-dominant, variation lines as notation.
Also โ per the user memory: do not use the user's name; use apostrophe for drops in markdown โ applies to Western-style drop notation; I'm using Japanese (โฒ9ไธ้ฆๆ / โฒ8ไบๆกๆ) so no asterisks anyway. Good.
Double-check one notational thing: โฒ6ไธใจ โ the ใจ moving from 5ไบ to 6ไธ. In Japanese notation when ambiguity... only one ใจ โ fine. โณๅ้ โ ้7ไบ takes โ wait โ ALSO could ๅพๆ take with... only ้7ไบ attacks 6ไธ โ (ๆก8ไธ โ, ็ โ not adjacent... 8ไบ-6ไธ?? file diff 2 โ). "โณๅ้" unambiguous โ.
Final eval language: ็พๅฑ้ขใใงใซๅ ๆๅๅข โ and after โฒ6ไธใจ it's effectively decided (necessary caveat: assuming accurate play through the mating net).
Also explain WHY the mate works structurally: 9ไธ hole (็ซฏๆญฉ 9ๅ advanced), ๆก8ไธ/้ฆ9ไธ self-blocking, ไบๆญฉ constraints actually on SENTE's side (no 8ไธ/9ไธ pawn drops) which the ้ฆๆ finesse solves. The 9ๅๆญฉ being advanced is the fatal weakness โ classic ็พๆฟ weakness when... actually it's a ็็พๆฟ with the ็ซฏ pushed; the ใจ้ already amputated the 5ไบ metal... I can mention: the formation is a collapsed ็็พๆฟ (katamino) whose second gold has been replaced by sente's ใจ้.
Let me also double check: "11th Eiล-sen" memory etc. โ not relevant; no memory application needed here beyond notation prefs. โ.
Write it now. I'll do: intro sentence (no header), then sections. Include ้ๅบฆ่จ็ฎ explicitly: sente mates in ~7 plies once the exchange happens; gote needs 5+ moves of non-checking buildup and all checking tries shed material without mating.
Actually, let me reconsider presenting "mate in 7" โ the sequence โฒ7ไบ้โณ9ไบ็โฒ9ไธ้ฆโณๅ็โฒ8ไบๆกโณ8ๅ็โฒ7ไบ้ = 7 plies โ "7ๆ่ฉฐ" in Japanese counting (attacker moves+defender... Japanese counts total plies: 7ๆ โ). After โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, threat = 7ๆ่ฉฐ. โ phrase as ใโฒ7ไบ้ใใใฎ7ๆ่ฉฐใ.
One more paranoid re-verification of โฒ9ไธ้ฆ necessity vs the immediate โฒ8ไบๆก in the โณ9ไบ็ branch โ โฒ8ไบๆก vs ็9ไบ: NOT check (ๆก8ไบ hits 7ไธ/9ไธ) โ right, so the ้ฆ comes first to DRAG the king to 9ไธ โ (ใใณใๅฏใ). And in the โณ9ไธ็ branch the ้ฆ is never needed (ๆก checks immediately) โ so the mate is 7ๆ vs 9ไบ, 5ๆ...wait: โณ9ไธ็โฒ8ไบๆกโณ8ๅ็โฒ7ไบ้ = โฒ7ไบ้โณ9ไธ็โฒ8ไบๆกโณ8ๅ็โฒ7ไบ้ = 5 plies! vs 9ไบ: 7 plies. So "5ใ7ๆ่ฉฐ".
And โ sanity: in โณ9ไธ็ line, hand after โฒ7ไบ้,โฒ8ไบๆก: ่ง้้ฆๆญฉ3 โ โฒ7ไบ้ โ available โ.
OK and the final overall claim once more โ is there ANY hole in "after โฒ6ไธใจโณๅ้โฒๅ้พ, gote's ONLY moves stopping โฒ7ไบ้-mate are โณ7ไบ้ฆฌ and โณ7ไธ้ๆ"? Other ideas: โณ6ไบๆกๆ?? โ ๆก can't be dropped... wait โ ๆก at 6ไบ: jumps to (5,4),(7,4) โ covers NOTHING relevant; โฒ7ไบ้ still mates โ. โณ7ไธๆกๆ?? โ ๆก drop 7ไธ: occupies 7ไธ (was that needed? mate used 7ไธ?? โ โ no โ mate: ้7ไบ... the ๆก7ไธ doesn't defend 7ไบ (ๆก at 7ไธ jumps 6ไธ?? wait ๅพๆๆก7ไธ: (6,3),(8,3) โ covers 6ไธ/8ไธ โ) โ mate stands. โณ8ๅๆญฉ?? In this instance, I can understand its raw CoT for the most part. As model capabilities continue to scale, I'm not confident that CoT will remain legible to more intelligent summarizers. Case in point, I feel like the transition between the initial reasoning and the raw CoT at the start of its response to the "Continue" prompt is essentially a non sequitur and I can't tell if the initial reasoning was an accurate reflection of the model's CoT for the first prompt. To state the obvious, models which reason in somewhat legible gobbledygook make interpretability and monitorability more difficult than models which reason in plain English. Hence, easy-to-understand CoT is desirable but it looks like the horses have already left the barn on that one.
I think the most likely explanation for what's happening here is that there's a summarizer which sits between the user and the model's raw CoT, translating the CoT into legible text similar to the post's demonstration of Haiku translating the Solitaire CoT. On the "Continue" prompt, a glitch transmitted the CoT directly to the chat UI as model output instead of displaying the summarizer-processed CoT within a reasoning block.
That seems like a much better example of illegible CoT, but I do wonder how much of that is just that I don't know any Japanese and my knowledge of Shogi is "I think it's kinda like chess but I have a vague memory that there's something about a dragon". And, based on reading this CoT, I infer that it's played on a 9x9 board rather than an 8x8.
That said, Haiku knows Japanese and Shogi and (enough) web design - I wonder if it'd be enough to produce a verifiably faithful [1] annotated breakdown of this CoT. I'll give it a shot.
BTW for reference there is indeed [2] a summarizer which sits between the user and the model's raw CoT, translating the CoT into legible text similar to the post's demonstration of Haiku translating the Solitaire CoT.
by "verifiably faithful" I mean "each snippet of shorthand has a bit of explanation mapped to it, there is no explanation that is not mapped to any bit of shorthand, the explanation as a whole makes sense, and each individual shorthand:explanation is a fairly obvious way to interpret that shorthand". โฉ๏ธ
The summarizer is a Haiku instance fed its previous summarized thinking and the current chunk and instructed to summarize that chunk in first person natural language. You can see the full summarizer prompt here (archive) โฉ๏ธ
Hmm, I agree that the reasoning is clearly about solving a card puzzle (as mentioned in the caption), but it's quite hard to decipher exactly what strategies are being considered. Imagine an analogous situation where the model is clearly reasoning about designing a DNA sequence, but it's very hard to tell what considerations it's actually thinking about or what leads it to choose the sequences it eventually lands on.
I mean yeah, if the model is reasoning about a domain where you have no domain knowledge you're not going to have a lot of luck understanding what it's doing. This will be true whether it uses shorthand or plain English though. If the model uses exclusively words which you know the lay meaning of (but which are likely domain-specific terms of art in context) you might get the impression that you understand, but it's not clear to me that that's actually a better state of affairs.
But generally, capabilities don't arise in a vacuum - earlier model versions will understand the domain, not well enough to produce the quality of output that the most advanced models can, but well enough to understand what the most advanced models are doing and why they're doing it. At least as long as the advanced model uses something approximating natural language to think, but I expect not-intentionally-obfuscated shorthand like this is a close enough approximation.
Can we avoid incentivizing the AI to endlessly compress its chain of thoughts, by giving it tokens to represent long strings of English words which frequently appear in chains of thought?
The AI doesn't want to switch to a compressed alien language, since it has to learn to both read and write a new token to represent a concept. But things like context window limitations force it to.
I think we can roughly decompose CoT usage into "scratchpad" and "metacognitive" purposes. Scratchpad-y actions are recording problem-specific information. Metacognitive-y actions are adaptively influencing future reasoning. (I'm calling them 'purposes' and not 'actions' or 'tokens' because they can overlap in the same tokens). Both are means of getting around limitations on serial depth, but the metacognitive component is shared across many problems and so doesn't have the Bayesian-truth-serum like problem (of having to encode things and then decode them successfully across many different tasks) that slows the drift of scratchpad-y parts away from what's intelligible to the initial model.
The Claude Fable 5/Mythos 5 System Card has a section in which they talk about illegible reasoning, and provide an "extreme" example thereof.
Models developing their own uninterpretable, unmonitorable internal language has been a major theoretical concern for a while, and when o3 was released last year with its disclaim overshadow disclaim vantage style word salad CoT, it seemed like the problem had become real and immediate. And yet, since o3, other model families have not appeared to have similar issues. If Mythos is having that issue, it would be a big deal.
Looking at the section of the System Card which describes the allegedly illegible reasoning, the system card says
about the following excerpt:
which sure looks like illegible word salad if you don't look at any of the words. However, even a cursory look at the excerpt shows that the reasoning is compact, but not by any means "incomprehensible". Perhaps "incomprehensed". A moderately awake reader will make observations like
From this, one would likely conclude that Claude was doing a Solitaire task[3], and was using a shorthand (likely defined earlier in the chain of thought) to explore a tree structure of possible move sequences in a tricky part of the game. One might also suspect that Claude was not having a very good time, and was getting increasingly frustrated.
This does not require particularly advanced intelligence to determine, either: Claude Haiku 4.5 immediately came to the same conclusion. The fact that I can understand Mythos' CoT could be written off as "models aren't yet superhuman, so that's not a durable state of affairs". Haiku, however, is a much smaller model than Mythos, and of an earlier generation which used a different tokenizer, and also has no trouble. If most Mythos CoT is at least this interpretable[4], I think Anthropic is still in a shockingly good place in terms of CoT interpretability, and in terms of CoT monitorability in cases where the monitored model is not actively adversarial.[5]
For reference, Haiku gives the following translation, which looks approximately correct to me (I think Haiku gets lost tracking the exact game state a couple of times, but the broad strokes look right).
Haiku's translation
The seven of clubs must be removed firstโit's the only thing blocking access to both the ten of spades and the nine of hearts.
Closing off a previous logical branch. Therefore, situations (ii) and (iv) from the earlier case analysis both create requirements that happen simultaneously.
Specifically, these four cards must all be in free cells at the same time: six of spades, jack of diamonds, nine of hearts, two of clubs.
That's four cards needing cells. But there are only four cells total. Complete dead endโabsolutely, catastrophically stuck.
Wait. Unless the seven of clubs's position relates to the eight of hearts somehow, AND the two of clubs can only drain at one specific critical juncture.
Then the two of clubs and nine of hearts must both go into cells at exactly the same moment. This is forced during the excavation of tableau column 8.
Dead end anyway. Let me restart.
The nine of hearts can only move onto the ten of spades the instant that ten becomes available.
The excavation sequence for tableau 8 is: king of clubs goes to tableau column 2, then two of clubs goes into a cell, then seven of clubs goes onto (or relates to) eight of hearts.
After we build the sequence involving nine of spades, that whole chunk depends on the king of clubs being in place first. Checkโking of clubs done.
The order: king of clubs to tableau 2, then build the chunk on top of it. (Note: four-cell limit.)
If we use cells for this, we end up with six of spades, jack of diamonds, nine of hearts all taking up space simultaneously. That's cell capacity maxed. Two dead ends. Only one slot left. Triple fail.
What if we run the chunk sequence before putting nine of hearts in a cell?
But nine of hearts has to be cellified during tableau 1 excavation, which is needed for five of clubs, which is needed for four of hearts and three of clubs, which is needed for tableau 2 excavation, which is needed for king of clubs positioning, which is needed for the chunk itself.
So the chunk is forced to come after nine of hearts goes in a cell. Dead end.
The chunk reaches capacity with those three cards in cells, leaving only one free slot. Triple dead end.
Jack of diamonds is now the critical bottleneck.
So maybe we delay the jack of diamonds going into a cell until after the chunk?
But we cellify jack of diamonds specifically to free up the jack of hearts so it can play onto queen of spades. (That move opens access to five of diamonds, needed for four of clubs.)
If we delay jack of diamonds, we delay four of clubs's resolution. But four of clubs goes into a cell early anyway (it always has to), and then waits cellified until five of diamonds finally becomes free.
The cells have to rotate. Four of clubs stays cellified from tableau 2's excavation onward, until five of diamonds is freed. And five of diamonds only becomes free after jack of hearts plays onto queen of spades. And that play only happens after jack of diamonds is cellified.
So all three (six of spades, four of clubs, jack of diamonds) must occupy cells during the same window, lasting until four of clubs finally drains to five of diamonds. After that drain, we have six of spades and jack of diamonds plus one free slot.
And what about nine of hearts?!
Nine of hearts gets cellified during tableau 1 excavation. So we have another overlapping requirement: six of spades, four of clubs, and nine of hearts all in cellsโbefore we even add jack of diamonds.
That leaves only one "rotating" slot. Here's the timeline:
State 1: Six of spades in a cell, two empty. State 2: Add nine of hearts from tableau 1. Six of spades and nine of hearts cellified, one empty. State 3: Add four of clubs from tableau 2. All three in cellsโfull capacity.
State 4: Now we need to excavate tableau 6. We can move nine of diamonds and eight of spades onto ten of clubs (okay, no cell needed). But eight of hearts has nowhere to go except a cell, and cells are full. Double dead end.
Is there another place for eight of hearts to go before we do the chunk? No. Dead end. So the impossible triangle emerges: nine of hearts, four of clubs, and eight of hearts all need cells at the same time. Verdammt.
What if we excavate tableau 6 before tableau 2?
Alternative state 3: Add eight of hearts. Six of spades, nine of hearts, eight of heartsโfull. But jack of hearts still needs to play onto queen of spades, and that requires jack of diamonds in a cell. Cells full. Triple dead end.

I think this is a moderately strong point of evidence in favor of @1a3orn's hypothesis that chains of thought will become denser forms of existing language rather than new, unintelligible languages.
I hypothesize tokenizer nonsense. Specifically, I hypothesize that Claude has "learned" that the space token sometimes combines with adjacent tokens in a way that the hyphen token does not. My further (crackpot, unsupported by anything resembling evidence) speculation is that for tricky reasoning tasks which only work if nontrivial geometrical stuff happens correctly in activation space, having consistent tokenization and token spacing is important. โฉ๏ธ
I expect others might have different hypotheses here. For example, I expect 1a3orn would hypothesize that Mythos is structurally imitating human shorthand, because humans do weird stuff like that in shorthand all the time, and that there's no actual advantage over a shorthand which uses spaces normally. In slight support of this hypothesis, the transcript also drops a "verdammt" instead of "dammit" or such, which is indeed the sort of substitution one might see stylistically when this sort of shorthand occurs in human settings, but I very much doubt that the language of cursing does anything useful in terms of activation space geometry. โฉ๏ธ
If one has spent way too much of one's childhood on a Windows 95 machine without internet access, one will have a dawning suspicion about what exactly the "card puzzle environment" is - namely Microsoft FreeCell. โฉ๏ธ
and I think it is reasonable to assume it is, considering that Anthropic calls this out as "an extreme example of illegible reasoning" โฉ๏ธ
Trying to train on the CoT might still cause issues. But it sure looks like the CoT isn't becoming accidentally unmonitorable. โฉ๏ธ
