I'm not entirely sure if it counts as ethnography, but hbdchick does analyses of the mating patterns of many cultures, and hypothesizes that they can cause differences in the way whole societies turn out. e.g.

I checked a few lists of good/popular ethnographies, and while I've read about many of them, I don't think I've read any of them.

Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets is a book by David Simon and it is essentially an ethnography of the homicide unit of the Baltimore police department. I've read parts of it and it's very good. It's the book on which the TV show, The Wire is based on. The Wire also has excellent ethnographic elements.
