The term hedonism refers to a set of philosophies which hold that the highest goal is to maximize pleasure, or more precisely pleasure minus pain. Egoistic hedonism refers to the maximization of personal pleasure, while universalist hedonism (more commonly known as hedonistic utilitarianism) aims at the maximization of pleasure across all sentient beings.
