has anyone done a breakdown of whether or not owning a gun is net-positive from a risk perspective? i.e. does the pro of being able to protect yourself/family with one outweigh the con of say, it accidentally firing and hurting someone?

That's gonna depend a LOT on the specifics of the owner's situation, I think.
