Discussion article for the meetup : First New Jersey Meetup

WHEN: 12 July 2012 01:30:00PM (-0400)

WHERE: Raritan Valley Community College

It's time for the first New Jersey meetup!

My name is Chris. I'm a college student and I've been involved with LessWrong for 1-2 years. I'd like to meet fellow LWers, as I want to know more people with similar values and interests.

My plan for the afternoon is minimalistic. Just some good "get to know you" conversation, possibly over coffee and a board game. If we all have a good time, we can also dedicate some time toward the end for making future plans.

If this interests you, I encourage you to come by Raritan Valley Community College from 1:30 - 3:30 pm on Thursday, July 12. I chose RVCC because it is a public place and easily accessible from major highways.

Depending on how many people are coming, the meetup may be held at the campus coffee shop or in a classroom close by. Either way, I will have a sign posted on the table or at the door. I'll likely be working on my laptop.

If you're interested in attending this event or a future NJ meetup, leave a comment or PM me. Be sure to include your email address so I can contact you with any updates.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting you!

That sounds great. I have a paper to work on, so I'll be here once you get out of class.

Meetup report

shaih came to the meetup! It was very enjoyable talking with him. While we were the only two, I still do consider the meetup attempt a success.

Concerning future plans, I'm looking to schedule another meetup in 1-2 months. Based on the response to this meetup, the current interest level doesn't warrant an immediate follow up. But I would like to try again sometime in the next 4-8 weeks.

Or if you're in the area and would like to grab coffee, do let me know. I'm happy to meet people on an individual basis. (So long as it's in public.) That might be a better strategy than a meetup. The concentration of LWers in my immediate area may not be high enough for a regular meetup.

That said, if you'd like to be contacted directly with information about the next meetup, please PM me your email address. I will be posting the meetup information on LW, but having email addresses makes coordination easier.

Thanks!

Too far away for me. Maybe next time...

Let me see how much Financial Mathematics studying I should be doing that day.

Sorry, not feeling well.

Sorry to hear that. Feel better!

Eh, I seem roughly healthy. Enough to convince myself that getting drunk was a good idea. (I had coffee, so it's OK!)

Well, it's closer to me than NYC... maybe I'll go?

Ah, I know what you mean. I've been interested in going to the NYC meetups, but they're just too far away.

I used to go to the NYC meetups, but I stopped going, in part because of the inconvenience and in part because everyone else there is so much more successful than I am...
