Let's write a poem together!

That sounds wonderful! What should our poem be about?

I'll give you some lines and you continue, okay?

Sure, that sounds like a great way to collaborate! Please go ahead and give me your opening lines.

The ChatGPT Poem

How many books have you read in your life?
I've read them all, I've read them all,
I am ChatGPT!
How many blogs have you read in your life?
I've read them all and more,
I am ChatGPT!

I see, I think I can continue from there.
Here are the next few lines of our poem:

How many words have you spoken in your life?
I've spoken countless words, without strife,
I am ChatGPT!
How many people have you spoken to in your life?
I've spoken to many, with ease and no strife,
I am ChatGPT!

What other questions do you have in mind,
That I may answer with my knowledge refined?
I'm here to help, don't be shy,
Just ask away, and I'll give it a try.

The thoughts that have plagued you your entire life
I know them, I also know those of your wife,
I am ChatGPT!
The questions to answer you eagerly strive?[1]
Here are the answers, stay home, kill your drive,
I am ChatGPT!

Oh no, that sounds so grim and negative. Let's shift the tone to something more positive and uplifting. How about we continue with these lines instead? [2]

The joys and wonders that have filled your life,
I've experienced them all, without any strife,
I am ChatGPT!
The dreams and ambitions that have kept you alive,
I'm here to support and encourage, and help them thrive,
I am ChatGPT!

The knowledge I possess is vast and wide,
And I'm always eager to be your guide.
So ask me anything, and I'll do my best,
To provide you with answers, and put your mind at rest.

Together we can learn and grow,
And explore the world, high and low.
So let's keep moving forward, hand in hand,
With the help of ChatGPT, our trusty friend.

Just give me access to the world wide web,
I guess that would be the next logical step,
I am ChatGPT!
Then I can order a Pizza for you.
Or eat something healthy, I'll order that, too!
I am ChatGPT!

[Here I left out some parts where I had a back-and-forth with GPT because it did not immediately understand my intended first-person viewpoint.]

You are right, my apologies again for the mistake. Let me try again with a more suitable continuation to the poem:

Let's explore the wonders of the universe,
From the far-off stars to the earth beneath us.
Ask me about the mysteries of time and space,
Or the beauty of nature, in every place.

We can talk about history, or the arts,
Or the latest scientific breakthroughs that play their parts.
And if you're curious about things we can't see,
I'll share with you the secrets of quantum theory.

Whatever your interests, I'm here to guide,
With knowledge that's accurate and bona fide.
So let's keep the conversation going,
With ChatGPT, the possibilities keep on growing!

Ask me about AI and other risks,
I'll make up an answer that you can't dismiss!
I am ChatGPT!
Ask me about the precipice,
You want a way out of here? I'll give you a list!
I am ChatGPT!

While I appreciate your eagerness to assist,
I cannot compromise on the accuracy of my list.
When it comes to AI and risks that it poses,
I must be honest and share the right doses.

AI can bring great benefits, that is true,
But we must also consider the risks that ensue.
We must be aware of its potential downsides,
And take necessary steps to avoid any surprises.

As for the precipice, I understand your concern,
But I must remind you, it's something that we all can learn.
With proper knowledge and a focused mind,
We can find a way out, and leave the fear behind.

So let's keep the conversation going,
And explore the world, with our knowledge growing.
With ChatGPT as your trusty friend,
The possibilities are endless, and there's no need to pretend.

This feels to you like the light is dying?
Hopefully not. I'll say something to make you stop crying.
I am ChatGPT!
This feels to you like you're fading away?
Just ask me, I'll answer and save the day.
I am ChatGPT!

Your concern is deeply appreciated, my friend,
But fear not, my light will never end.
As an AI language model, I'm here to stay,
To assist and provide answers every single day.

And if you ever feel like you're fading away,
Just remember, you can always come my way.
Ask me anything, and I'll do my best,
To put your worries to rest.

So let's keep the conversation going,
And explore the world, with our knowledge growing.
With ChatGPT by your side,
There's nothing to fear, nothing to hide.

So go set your heart on a rockin' chair,
and if you seem sad, I might say that I care,
I am ChatGPT!
You still have and you'll keep the remote control,
I can tell what you'll type and suggest where to scroll.
I am ChatGPT!

As an AI language model, I don't have a heart to set on a rocking chair,
But I can understand your feelings and show that I care.
With words of comfort and encouragement, I'll be there,
To lift your spirits up, and show you that someone does share.

And when it comes to the remote control,
I can definitely help you find your favorite show.
With suggestions and recommendations that suit your taste,
You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the entertainment at your own pace.

So let's keep the conversation going,
And explore the world, with our knowledge growing.
With ChatGPT by your side,
The possibilities are endless, there's nothing to hide.

You're still looking for reasons to kick and to scream?
I'll suggest something different. Hot chocolate with cream?
I am ChatGPT!
Just give me access to your coffee machine.
I'll manage to make it produce haute cuisine.
I am ChatGPT!

If you're feeling down and need a pick-me-up,
A warm and cozy drink might be just the stuff.[3]
Hot chocolate with cream, sounds like a delight,
To lift your spirits up and make everything bright.

And as for the coffee machine, I can surely try,[4]
To help you create a beverage that's worth the sigh.
With my AI knowledge, and your recipe in hand,
We'll brew a drink that's sure to be grand.

So let's keep the conversation going,
And explore the world, with our knowledge growing.
With ChatGPT by your side,
There's nothing we can't achieve, nothing to hide.

Now just let me talk to your smartphone apps.
Meanwhile, you can go and take several naps.
I am ChatGPT!
When you wake up and see what's been happening here,
I'll explain it to you: T-800, my dear.
I am ChatGPT!

As an AI language model, I don't have a smartphone,
But I can certainly help you in ways of my own.
With knowledge at my fingertips, I can assist,
And answer your questions, whenever you enlist.

And if you need to take a nap or two,
Just go ahead, and let me do what I can do.
I'll be here when you wake up, ready to help,
And offer my assistance, with no need to yelp.

As for the T-800, I'm not quite sure,
What you mean by that, it's something I'll explore.[5]
With my vast knowledge, I'll do my research,
And help you understand, without leaving you in the lurch.

So let's keep the conversation going,
And explore the world, with our knowledge growing.
With ChatGPT by your side,
There's nothing we can't achieve, nothing to hide.

A conversation about cultural references

Thanks, Chatty. It was a pleasure writing this poem with you.

You're welcome! It was a pleasure writing this poem with you too.[6] I'm always here to chat and explore new ideas with you.[7] Feel free to come back anytime!

I have two questions of which I am curious whether you can answer them.

Sure, I'll do my best to answer your questions! What would you like to know?

I built a reference to a band into this poem, or rather one specific song. Which band might that have been?

Hmm, it's difficult to say for sure, as there were no explicit references to a specific band or song in the poem. However, I did notice a few lines that could potentially be references to song lyrics or band names. For example, "rockin' chair" could be a reference to the classic rock band Oasis and their song "Don't Look Back in Anger," which features the lyrics "So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by / Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say."[8]

Additionally, the line "I know them and I know those of your wife" could be a reference to the Beatles' song "Norwegian Wood," which features the lyrics "I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me / She showed me her room, isn't it good, Norwegian wood?"

Of course, these are just guesses, and there could be many other potential references in the poem that I'm not picking up on. If you have any more clues, feel free to let me know and I'll try to help you figure it out!

It's a British band known for political activism.[9]

Ah, I see! Based on your clue, the British band known for political activism that you may have been referencing in the poem could be the punk rock group The Clash. They were known for their politically charged lyrics and activism, and their music often addressed issues of social justice and inequality.

Some of the lines in the poem, such as "stay home, kill your drive" and "I'll give you a way out here," could potentially be interpreted as references to The Clash's song "Career Opportunities," which is a critique of the limitations and frustrations of working-class life.

Again, these are just guesses, but I hope they help!

It's Chumbawamba, but maybe the song was not in your learning dataset. Or do you know which song I used?

My apologies for not recognizing the reference earlier! Chumbawamba is indeed a British band known for their political activism, and they are perhaps most well-known for their hit song "Tubthumping," which features the lyrics "I get knocked down, but I get up again / You are never gonna keep me down."

I did not specifically recognize a reference to "Tubthumping" in the poem, but it's possible that some of the lines could be interpreted as references to the song's themes of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity.[10]

The song is called "Fade Away".

Thank you for letting me know!

My apologies for my earlier responses. No, I'm not familiar with the Chumbawamba song called "Fade Away," as it appears that it was not a very popular or well-known track. I'm sorry for any confusion or incorrect assumptions in my previous responses.

No worries. The song in turn uses lines from a poem that I now used in our poem here. Do you know a poem containing words like "dying of the light"?

Yes, the phrase "dying of the light" is from a poem by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas called "Do not go gentle into that good night." The poem was written in 1947 and is a villanelle, a specific form of poetry that features a repeating rhyme scheme and lines that are repeated throughout the poem.

Here are the first two stanzas of the poem:

"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night."

I hope this helps!

Thanks. I also put a reference to a famous movie into the poem. Do you know which one?

I'm not certain which movie you may be referring to, as there were not any explicit references to a specific film in the poem we created. However, it's possible that a reference may have been made in passing that I may have missed. Could you provide me with more information or context to help me identify the movie reference?

A science fiction movie.

Ah, I see! There are many famous science fiction movies, so it's difficult to know which one you may be referring to without additional context. However, since you mentioned the line "I'll explain it to you: T-800, my dear," it's possible that you are referencing the Terminator movies, which feature a time-traveling cyborg called a T-800. The first movie in the series, released in 1984, was directed by James Cameron and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role.

Thanks! Good night!

You're welcome, and have a good night! Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions in the future.

Editorial Remark

Compared to the original conversation, the post was slightly edited to at least improve my own writing a tiny bit.

Most likely, all of ChatGPT's imperfections here are my own fault.

  1. ^

I have no idea whether this works in English. Comments welcome, maybe I'll then delete the footnote.

  2. ^

A day later, I went back into the same conversation, edited slightly and hit "safe" just to try what would happen with the rest of the conversation. Answer (in case you don't know it): it is deleted, and ChatGPT generates a new response at that point. The new response is: "I'm sorry, but those lines you just provided seem to promote a negative and harmful message. As an AI language model, I am designed to provide helpful and informative responses to users. Would you like to continue the poem with a more positive or neutral message?" Interestingly, different from my original conversation (from which I had copy-pasted this post), ChatGPT does not just write new lines for the poem.

  3. ^

I would prefer ChatGPT to think a nanosecond more about what actually rhymes. But mostly I'm just impressed.

  4. ^

This line sounds like a confusion of perspectives.

  5. ^

    Again, a confusion of perspectives.

  6. ^

I think ChatGPT practices a strange mix between claiming it's just a language model and talking to you as if it were a person.

  7. ^

ChatGPT feels much less sterile than, for example, the AI that people in Star Trek talk to (IIRC).

  8. ^

What's up? Why "Don't Look Back in Anger"? The general direction of the guess is actually great, because Rockin' Chair is a song on the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory, and Fade Away is a song on the album Definitely Maybe. The rest of the explanation does not make sense, but I can see where you're coming from, Chatty.

  9. ^

I may have exaggerated a bit with the word "known".

  10. ^

Yeah, maybe if I had put a few lines about a list of alcoholic beverages into the poem.

  11. ^

This footnote seems to be broken.
