This is a special post for quick takes by Raemon. Only they can create top-level comments. Comments here also appear on the Quick Takes page and All Posts page.
This is an experiment in short-form content on LW2.0. I'll be using the comment section of this post as a repository of short, sometimes-half-baked posts that either:
don't feel ready to be written up as a full post
I think the process of writing them up might make them worse (i.e. longer than they need to be)
I ask people not to create top-level comments here, but feel free to reply to comments like you would a FB post.
I know of a lot of people writing AI policy thoughts up in private google docs, planning for big effortposts after they figure things.
I think it would be better if more of this intellectual work was happening in public (i.e. writing up quick shortforms or just short posts about your interim thoughts).
This seems useful:
a) some people have disagreements that are interesting to expose
b) some people are duplicating work, or thinking through similar problems, and they could instead be exploring more edges of the intellectual knowledge graph.
I think Thomas Larsen's recent shortform happened because he was writing a long doc and I said "you should write a shortform ASAP" and then he wrote IMO a pretty great piece that honestly could/should be a post unto itself.
I would like LessWrong to be a massive engine of progress for finding the best near-term and mid-term policies to advocate. There are probably better solutions than "everyone write more quick takes or short posts on the margin", which I'm thinking about. But meanwhile, writing up more quick takes seems like a start.
I will probably do some "Highlights from the scattered posts/quick takes" next week as I orient to what everyone's thinking about.
